Ferrari driver Charles LeClerc delighted the Tifosi when he snatched pole position at Monza. Admittedly, the qualifying session was quite farcical, as 90% of the runners failed to reach the flag on time to start their final flying laps. However, in the end, LeClerc was able to keep pole position.

Coming back to the Italian Grand Prix weekend, this pole is LeClerc’s 4th of the season. Five times world champion Lewis Hamilton will line up alongside the 21-year-old Monegasque on the front row for Mercedes. Meanwhile, Finnish team mate Valtteri Bottas third and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel fourth.

Earlier in the session, Kimi Raikkonen had crashed out, bringing out the red flag with six minutes to go. When the session restarted, every team did their usual tactics of playing the waiting game. Finally, led by Nico Hulkenberg, they all filed out, but the Renault driver ran wide at the first corner.

What followed next was a bizarre scene where every driver backed off, almost to a standstill. So, Hulkenberg rejoined, still ahead of the other 8 drivers and they all continued backing off while the timer ticked down.

Then, Carlos Sainz in the McLaren grew a brain and bolted, thus managing to reach the chequered flag on time.
