Wimbledon Championships 2019 Prize Money Distribution

The Wimbledon Championships 2019 has almost arrived with the opening round is scheduled to start from July 1 at the All England Club. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) have increased the money for the Championships 2019 by 11.76 percent.

The winner of the men’s and women’s singles event of the Wimbledon Championships 2019 title will earn whopping prize money of £38 million which is equal to $49.4 million USD. The prize money for the winner of the Wimbledon Championships 2018 was £34 million equalling $44.2 million USD.

Interestingly, the prize money for the qualifying and rounds one to three in the singles will rise by 10 percent. The first round participant will earn £45,000 which is 15.38% more than the last year. The round 2 and round 3 participants will earn £72000 and £111,000 respectively which increases 14.29 percent and 11 percent from the past year.

The players failing at the court round and the quarterfinals will earn £176,000 and £294,000 respectively. While the semifinalist and finalist will receive £588,000 and £1.175 million respectively.

The men’s and women’s singles champions at the Wimbledon Championships 2019 will receive £2.35 million each — £100,000 more than in the previous year.

The Wimbledon Championships 2019 total prize money didn’t cross the $62.5 million at this year’s opening Australian Open in Melbourne. While the French Open 2019 gave total prize money of €42.6 million equalling $48 million USD.

The Chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), Philip Brook said in a statement, “It is a clear demonstration, once again, of our continued commitment to do what we can for players for whom it will have the most impact.”

However, the Wimbledon Championships 2019 also introduced a new rule of fining the players who go into the matches in with pre-existing injuries like the last year.

In the 2018 edition of the Wimbledon Championships, many players entered the first round with injuries and withdraw from the tournament, taking away the prize money. However, the management has decided that a player will be fined up to 100% of their prize money if the AELTC believes that the players should not have participated.
