Following A’ja Wilson’s altercation with an Indiana Fever fan that started with the fan pointing at Wilson, Sophie Cunningham took to TikTok to take a subtle jab at the Las Vegas Aces star. With Indiana leveling the series and Wilson losing her cool, Cunningham had her moment on social media, but sports analyst Nick Wright thought it was the wrong move.

In the do-or-die game of the first-round matchup between the Aces and the Fever, A’ja Wilson rose to the occasion, recording 36 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and an assist. The Aces won the series after beating the Fever 94-83 in Las Vegas.

“Regardless of what you feel about Sophie Cunningham’s views, I think we can all agree that her mocking A’ja online is tantamount to if Kent Bazemore went after LeBron during the ‘15 ECF. Just an absolutely absurd “Don’t poke the beast” moment from a bench player.”

The ‘mocking’ Wright was referring to in his post was what Cunningham said in her TikTok. The Fever guard had referenced her own pointing gesture at DeWanna Bonner during a game between the Fever and the Phoenix Mercury back in June, which went viral. So Cunningham took credit for making the gesture popular in the first place.

“Not trying to be dramatic — at all. Like, seriously. I’m just here having my morning coffee and … what a d— comeback year for the point. Who would have ever thought … Just, who would have ever thought,” Cunningham said with a chuckle.

However, Cunningham was unable to contribute much for the Fever in Game 3. In 24 minutes, the guard scored five points on 2-of-4 shooting, two assists, and a rebound.

This is what prompted Wright to compare Cunningham to Kent Bazemore, a guard for the Atlanta Hawks in 2015, hypothetically trolling prime 2015 LeBron James, who in this case is A’ja Wilson, during the Hawks’ clash against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

However, the Game 2 incident did seem to rile up the four-time MVP. With 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Fever leading 88-77, Wilson got caught up in an off-ball battle with Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who was trying to set a screen.

Following their clash, a foul was called on Cunningham, who had started protesting while on the floor.

Wilson was having a more difficult night. Just then, a Fever fan stood up from his seat and started pointing at Wilson. According to witnesses, he was saying the foul should have been called on her, not Cunningham.

Wilson was not happy about the fan’s gesture towards her at all. If not for teammate Sydney Colson and others, the situation could have escalated further, as Wilson started pointing back towards the fan.

The Aces’ star was assessed a technical foul but didn’t back down from her stance even after the game. However, that changed in Game 3. When asked whether she used the incident with the fan as fuel against the Fever, Wilson shared her perspective.

“Honestly, I had my days. I had my moment, cuz I’m human. But after a while, I understood that I didn’t want that to be a distraction to myself and to my team, and I knew what we had to do coming into tonight. So, I put it behind me.”

Overall, despite the one out-of-character moment, it was A’ja Wilson’s series through and through. With the Indiana Fever out of the playoffs, the reigning champions march on to the semifinals, where they will play either the Golden State Valkyries or the Dallas Wings.
