Aaliyah Edwards has been delivering the kind of performances that are causing everyone to jump from their seats. Performance Unrivaled promised to showcase. But as the final buzzers went off after a recent game between Lunar Owls BC and Laces BC, the spotlight shifted away from what she did and toward what still isn’t happening around her.

Edwards was brilliant, but the result around her wasn’t!
Despite the Connecticut Sun star forward dropping in 38 points and 13 rebounds, Marina Mabrey pouring in 26 points on 10-for-24 shooting and grabbing 5 rebounds, the Lunar Owls remain winless at 0–3, a stark reminder that individual excellence isn’t enough when the supporting cast hasn’t stepped up consistently, a fact that analysts were quick to notice.

In a conversation between Lisa Leslie and Renee Montgomery on TNT Sports US, their praise for Aaliyah Edwards quickly turned into a deeper, more uncomfortable breakdown of what her historic performance actually revealed about the Lunar Owls’ current reality.
“I’m not gonna count the Lunar Owls out just yet. No matter what.” 👀@LisaLeslie & @ReneeMontgomery discussed the Owls dropping to 0-3 despite Edwards and Mabrey combining for 64 PTS tonight. pic.twitter.com/qF23F4tvlc

“It’s the worst when you have an amazing game on a loss because you feel great,” Montgomery said. “You know you played well. She had 38 and 13. She was doing damage…(Edwards and Mabrey) scored 64 of the team’s 72 points. Think about that. That is not a recipe for success,” she added. “That’s something to build off of, but you need more.”

“If you’re Aaliyah Edwards, it’s like, okay. I was getting it done on whoever was guarding me. I mean, there were different people each time she took her time; she was patient … That’s what you take from it. You just hope that your other teammates. Rebecca Allen got great looks tonight. Rachel Banham, you hope she can make some more. Temi Fágbénlé, she is a player that has a motor, so can she generate some office of rebounds? But the thing that I take from that is Lunar Owls is – you gotta shoot, to get hot, shoot to stay hot, and Aaliyah Edwards, keep that motor. But you need more scoring from others,” she further added.
So until the teammates show up, Edwards’ historic nights may continue to come with a frustrating asterisk. And for now, the Lunar Owls are still winless.

What’s next for Aaliyah Edwards and the Lunar Owls?
The search for the Lunar Owls’ first win isn’t getting any simpler. Instead, their margin for error is shrinking fast, as most of the teams have begun to settle into a rhythm.
On Saturday, January 17, the Owls will face their next test against the Mist BC, the league’s most complete team to this point – featuring Breanna Stewart, Arike Ogunbowale, and Allisha Gray. And it’s safe to say they will bring pressure from every level as they have done so far by forcing their opponents to defend every inch of the floor. For the Owls, that balance presents a direct challenge: can they avoid another night where brilliance at the top masks a lack of support underneath?

That question cuts straight to the heart of the Owls’ biggest issue. Edwards and Marina Mabrey can’t be responsible for nearly the entire offensive load. The Owls don’t just need help – they need reliability. Allen and Banham have shown some potential, but it is far from reliable right now, as they haven’t made their shots consistently, leaving defenses free to collapse on Edwards.

Hovering over all of this is the looming return of Skylar Diggins-Smith, who has been out of the games so far. Until the Owls have a true floor general to organize possessions and slow the game when it tilts out of control, their offense remains fragile. Edwards has been more than capable of holding the fort, but sustaining success without structure is a difficult ask.
