A’ja Wilson’s latest outing at Gainbridge Fieldhouse was not as smooth as she would’ve hoped for, with her troubles extending beyond the hardwood to a Fever fan. Wilson spent most of the night battling Indiana Fever defenders as the Las Vegas Aces fought to close the series in Game 2. However, as the game wound down, the superstar forward found herself dealing with a different opponent sitting beyond the baseline.

It all started with 4:12 left in the game, with the Aces down 11. Wilson ran up to set a screen on Sophie Cunningham, who was pestering Aces guard Chelsea Gray. When Cunningham switched onto Wilson, the resulting contact caused Cunningham to fall backwards, leaving Wilson tumbling, with the referees calling a foul on Cunningham. However, it was what happened next that enraged Wilson and drew the arena’s attention.
As Wilson walked over to the baseline after getting up, a fan began pointing at her and saying something. Wilson took off her mouthguard and fired back at the fan while walking over to him. She was held back by referees and arena personnel before being assessed a technical foul following a lengthy review. The sequence was caught on the broadcast before being clipped and reposted on X by Underdog WNBA.
Afterwards, Kelsey Mitchell missed the technical free throw, and Wilson hit both of hers.
According to Fever insider Tony East, the fan and the person accompanying him were escorted away by security, but returned to their seats about five minutes later, and “is high fiving the people around him.”
The incident came during a difficult game for A’ja Wilson and the Aces. After taking the Fever defense apart in Game 1 with a 38-point outing in a 102-85 win, she struggled significantly more. She finished the game with 22 points on 5-11 shooting with nine rebounds, two assists, and three steals, but also logged four turnovers, four fouls, and a team-worst -16 plus/minus.
As a result, the Aces ended up going down 89-99, with the Fever tying the best-of-three series 1-1, with the final game set to take place on October 1 at Michelob ULTRA Arena back in Las Vegas. The Aces have never lost a single first-round series since coming to Las Vegas, so history is on their side when it comes to performing, something that head coach Stephanie White praised them for after the Fever lost Game 1.
“Give Vegas credit,” she said. “They’re defending champions for a reason. They understand the moment. They understand that playoffs require a different version, a different level of intensity and urgency, and they came with it. This is what they’re supposed to do. They’re supposed to win Game 1.”
This time, however, Jackie Young’s game-high 31 points were not enough to take the Aces and A’ja Wilson to a win, and only time will tell if they can bounce back to championship form in Game 3.
