Another loss was added to the Connecticut Sun’s record on Wednesday night, but sophomore star Aneesah Morrow still walked away with a reason to smile. In a rebuilding season meant for development more than meaningful team success, the forward delivered what might be the best offensive night of her young WNBA career.

Despite the Sun falling 92-84 to the Mystics, Morrow went off for a career-high 21 points on 8-16 shooting, adding four threes, leading Connecticut in scoring and showing that her game is expanding beyond the rebounding prowess that made her an intriguing prospect.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to snap the Sun’s losing streak, which now sits at 3, and the team now stands at 7-21 for the season, the second-worst record, only ahead of the Seattle Storm. Fellow sophomore Sonia Citron led the charge against the Sun, scoring 22 points and four assists of her own to help secure Washington’s win and continue their momentum, now 3 wins over .500.

Morrow also eclipsed 500 career points after her first bucket, and five Sun players recorded double-digit games.

This comes as Morrow’s name has come up in trade talks. This season has been more productive than her rookie season, but some concerns remain, particularly in her efficiency. Despite her point-per-game average increasing from 7.7 to 10.5, her efficiency has only gone up marginally, from 36.6% from the field to 40.7%. Additionally, her three-point shot is not reliable either, logging only 28.1% from deep, and her free throw percentage is also subpar at 61.9%

According to The Athletic‘s Annie Costabile, a possible trade that could go through is one involving the New York Liberty’s Betnijah Laney-Hamilton. According to the reporter, the Sun have positional overlap, draft capital, and $800,769 in cap space, and they are in position to be a top seller after losing Marina Mabrey to the Toronto Tempo in what has become a career year for her.

Unfortunately, despite Morrow’s best efforts, the game tonight was not an addition to the win column.

Aneesah Morrow’s Career Night Not Enough as Mystics Pull Away After Third-Quarter Surge

The Connecticut Sun shined in their opening of the game despite ultimately falling to the Washington Mystics at CareFirst Arena, showing flashes of potential. Aneesah Morrow caught fire early, scoring 14 first-quarter points and finishing the period 3-3 from beyond the arc. Kennedy Burke also landed a buzzer-beating three to extend Connecticut’s lead to 33-26 after the first, the highest scoring quarter the team has had this season.

However, Washington eventually fought their way back into the game in the second, with Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen leading the charge, erasing the Sun’s lead before taking one of their own late in the half.

Despite this, the Sun kept things close with Morrow, Saniya Rivers, and Leila Lacan adding contributions, including a second buzzer-beater for the Sun from Rivers to end the first half tied at 54-54.

The Mystics eventually took control of the game after the halftime break, with the Sun cooling down at the worst time. Washington outscored their opponents 25-10 in the third period behind strong outings from Iriafen, Citron, Lauren Betts and Shakira Austin, and though the Sun trimmed it to single digits in the fourth with an all-around effort, Washington held firm to secure the win.
