Teresa Weatherspoon’s termination by the Chicago Sky immediately after her lone season came as a shock. Weatherspoon couldn’t lead the Sky to the playoffs or accolades, but the Sky’s decision not to offer her a second season is proof of the league’s fast-paced judgments regarding head coaches. While the Sky struggled, a young rookie Angel Reese thrived in that year under Weatherspoon, and in her latest podcast, she didn’t hesitate to take a strong stance on the latter’s departure from the Sky.

Reese invited Weatherspoon to the latest episode of her Unapologetically Angel podcast, where the duo delved into the Chicago Sky’s decision to move on from Weatherspoon, citing that they are building for the future.
“I think you move with a lot of grace, ” the Chicago Sky Star said. “It was very unfortunate for a lot of us, more than you know. I kind of took from it like, I always told you, people always come in your life for a reason and a season.”

Despite facing a tough decision from the Chicago Sky Front Office, Weatherspoon isn’t harboring any resentment toward the team, but the lack of respect in the team’s approach to firing her was evident. “I’m always going to be respectful regardless of situations. And I expect the same. But I didn’t get that. It wasn’t the best feeling, but it was their choice,” she said.
“I got a phone call and a cancellation of my meeting. But I chose to have a meeting for a face-to-face conversation, and in the conversation, I never got an answer, and I still don’t.”
With Weatherspoon, Reese announced herself to the world in her rookie year. The trust Weatherspoon showed in Reese helped her become a formidable offensive player with the precision skill of rebounding. And looking back, Reese had nothing but affection for her former head coach. “I think you came into my life for the right reason, and I can’t speak for anybody else. I’m just so thankful that it was the right time, it was the perfect time,” Reese said.

With the Chicago Sky, Weatherspoon managed a disappointing 13-27 record, failing to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2018. However, it is understandable, given that Weatherspoon was in her debut year as head coach of a WNBA team. While she has worked as an assistant to the New Orleans Pelicans, filling the shoes of a championship-winning coach, James Wade, in the Sky would definitely take its toll.

Moreover, the team was in a rapid transition phase during that period. The roster changed significantly, with rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso considered trump cards for the season. Reese and Cardoso both shone for the Sky in that year, making it to the WNBA All-Rookie team. However, being a championship contender on just their shoulders amid a tumultuous year would be too much to ask.

In the very next season, it was quite clear that Weatherspoon might not have been the primary defaulter for Sky in 2024. Without Weatherspoon, the Sky remained a shadow of the dominance they established between 2019 and 2022.
Lessons, Losses, and Leadership in Chicago
Following Teresa Weatherspoon’s firing, the Chicago Sky brought in former Indiana Pacers and Las Vegas Aces assistant Tyler Marsh as the new head coach. Similar to Weatherspoon, the Sky assignment was Marsh’s first assignment as head coach of a WNBA team. And as the season proceeded, the results were no different either.

Under Marsh, Angel Reese, and co. finished 10-34 in the season, missing the playoffs for the second straight year. Reese did have some personal W’s with her second consecutive rebounding leader feat, but the team struggled immensely on offense. The team ranked in the offensive power rating list for most weeks of the season. Moreover, injuries to crucial players, Courtney Vandersloot and Reese herself didn’t help Marsh in her first season as Sky head coach.
However, Reese has showcased her trust in Marsh, stating that the team believes in him. “We have to give Tyler grace because he’s a rookie coach, too. He’s the head coach, but it’s us on the floor,” she said. “We have to look ourselves in the mirror and be patient with ourselves and continue to just grind. We don’t point the finger.”
