Looks like the curse finally packed its bags and left the Chicago Sky alone. For a week straight, close losses haunted them. Defensive breakdowns turned every fourth quarter into a horror film. But against the LA Sparks, those ghosts vanished without a trace. And no, this wasn’t dumb luck or a lucky night in Wintrust Arena. The Sky came armed with adjustments, lessons from past slip-ups, and a fire Sparks fans didn’t see coming. Chicago didn’t just stumble into their fourth win of the season. They earned every second of it. And the star of the show, Angel Reese, peeled back the curtain after the buzzer. She explained how accountability and tweaks in strategy fueled this turnaround.

The 2025 WNBA season hasn’t exactly gone how Chicago Sky fans imagined, even with Angel Reese in town. After last night’s win over the LA Sparks, Chicago now sits at a rough 4-10 record. And if you’ve been watching, you’ve seen the pattern. Reese and Kamilla Cardoso have been battling, leaving everything on the floor. But when it came to defending, the Sky looked rattled, out of sync, and easily exposed. That’s been their “Achilles’ heel” all season. Until yesterday. For the first time in weeks, Chicago clamped down when it mattered. Credit first-year head coach Tyler Marsh for that shift. And Angel Reese didn’t hesitate to spill the details postgame.

In the postgame press conference, Angel Reese didn’t sugarcoat a thing. When asked about those third and fourth-quarter collapses, she kept it real. What changed against the Sparks? She said, “I think our guards did a great job tonight they came out and guarded tonight.” But it wasn’t just the players flipping the script. Behind the scenes, the coaching staff had been relentless, and Angel made sure to spotlight it. “And they’ve been our coaches been cursing them out all week, past couple weeks about guarding, guarding, guarding. And they stepped up to the plate and tonight was the post,” She added. Well, and that edge, both from the floor and the sidelines, finally snapped Chicago’s late-game curse.

This defensive shift didn’t happen overnight. The league, insiders, and coaches have clocked those gaps for weeks. Even head coach Tyler Marsh called it out loud and clear. “We need to protect the 3-point line better. That continues to be our Achilles heel.”  Marsh admitted not long ago. And against the Sparks, it finally looked like the message landed. The Sky tightened up, closed out shooters, and refused to fold late in the game.

Marsh’s strategy to broaden Reese’s game, encouraging her to play more like a small forward with perimeter skills, also paid off, as her six assists showed her growing versatility.

And you know what? While the defense handled its business, Angel Reese quietly etched her name into the record books again. Curious what she pulled off this time? Stay with me.
