Apparently, yelling and clapping at a referee does not always warrant a technical foul in the WNBA Finals. At least, that is the impression some fans have been left with after Angel Reese escaped punishment for her reaction to an official during the Atlanta Dream’s championship series.

The incident, a video of which one fan shared on X, saw Reese react animatedly at a referee in Game 6 of the WNBA Finals against the Golden State Valkyries. The moment occurred early in the third quarter, with Reese attempting to score near the basket but missing her shot and failing to secure the rebound. However, it appeared that an uncalled foul against Reese during her shooting attempt prompted her reaction. Frustrated by the lack of a whistle, the Dream star was seen shouting and clapping toward the referee before eventually walking away.
“Angel Reese yells and claps at the ref after not getting a call and doesn’t get a Tech. I’ve seen other players get a tech for much less 😭✌️,” the fan captioned the video clip of the incident.
The clip has since attracted various reactions from fans, many of whom have also expressed the opinion that Reese’s reaction warranted a technical foul. They argued that similar behavior would likely have been penalized had it come from another player, raising questions about whether officials are applying the same standards across the league.
“And I see a lot of other players get the dam call,” one fan wrote. Another fan questioning whether other players would receive the same leniency following Reese’s reaction and suggesting that the incident could set an awkward precedent for future officiating decisions, said, “Better not see players get clapping technicals next year after this display,” the fan wrote.
One fan did not even hesitate to draw a direct comparison with Caitlin Clark, suggesting that the Indiana Fever star would have faced harsher consequences had she reacted in the same manner.
“Cc got crucified something crazy for complaining lol,” the fan wrote, pointing to what they perceived as a difference in how the two players are treated when expressing frustration with officials.
One fan even went as far as suggesting that referees are more lenient with Angel Reese than they are with other players.
“It’s every blown layup as well. She’s too talented to always be complaining to the refs, then again the refs give her the biggest leash I’ve ever seen ✌️,” the fan wrote, accusing the officials of allowing the Dream star greater freedom to complain without facing punishment.
Reese did, however, finish the game with five personal fouls. But beyond the officiating debate, she also delivered an impressive performance on the court, recording a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double to help the Atlanta Dream secure an 80-69 victory over the Golden State Valkyries. The win preserved Atlanta’s championship hopes and forced a decisive Game 7.
The championship will now be decided in a winner-takes-all Game 7 scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026. The Golden State Valkyries will host the Atlanta Dream at Chase Center in San Francisco, with both teams looking to close out the series and claim the WNBA title.
