Angel Reese couldn’t seem to miss as the Atlanta Dream defeated the New York Liberty 95-84 on Monday. Atlanta, led by Reese and her double-double, was simply too much for the Liberty team in a game with huge playoff consequences. Due to her performance, the WNBA wasted no time in celebrating Reese extending her own WNBA record in this game and tying with a WNBA legend.

Angel Reese finished the night with 18 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, while adding two assists and one block. Her jaw-dropping number of double-doubles across her three-season career now stands at 81, which has already tied her with eight-time WNBA All-Star and ex-Indiana Fever player Yolanda Griffith in 12th place on the WNBA’s all-time double-doubles list.

What sets Reese apart is the number of games it took her to reach this milestone. While Yolanda Griffith took 311 games to reach this mark, Reese has done it in just 106, per StatMuse. Just in her debut year in the W, Angel Reese held the all-time record for consecutive double-doubles with 15, and finished the season with 26 double-doubles. She held another 11-game double-double streak in her second season. This year, she has only gotten better.

With the double-double against the Liberty, Reese now extends her own single-season record to 32nd double-double of the season. Should Reese secure one more double-double in the final regular-season game, she will pull level with Rebekkah Brunson for 11th on the all-time list. Barring injury setbacks, a climb into the top 10 appears all but assured by the end of next season, as she sits just 15 behind 10th-place Tamika Catchings.

While Breanna Stewart and Co. tried to do everything to get back in the game, Atlanta’s depth on both ends of the floor was a little too much to overcome. In the final two minutes, the Liberty pulled within eight points, at 80-88, but the Dream held on to win the game.

While Jordin Canada added 19 points, veteran DeWanna Bonner came off the bench to add 17 points. Rhyne Howard scored 16 for the Dream in an all-around display for the team. Bonner’s aspirations to make a playoff run in perhaps her final season in the league look to be coming true.

For the Liberty, Breanna Stewart scored a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Jonquel Jones added 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Liberty (26-17) saw their three-game win streak come to an end, officially locking in their playoff start away from home. The game’s ending also saw Stewart receive her first technical foul in nine years, and she certainly felt Reese had a lot to do with it.

“(That tech) absolutely was because of a no-call. She slapped the s*** out of my hand,” she reportedly said.

Stewart and Co. will get one more chance to get the better of Atlanta in the next game. But if Atlanta wins again on Wednesday, it will book the fourth seed and will enjoy home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

If the Dream finish fourth, there is a good chance that they will face the Indiana Fever. If that happens, then this playoff matchup will add another fresh twist to the Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark rivalry.

For the Liberty, the next game is a must-win. If they lose, they risk staying at the number eight seed, and that will mean facing the number one seed, which would most likely be the Minnesota Lynx. Getting past them will be a daunting task, especially in the first round itself.

Atlanta will hope to finish the season on a high, especially considering the form Angel Reese is in. She is averaging 16.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 steals per game this season. Atlanta fans will hope that Reese and Co. can deliver their first-ever WNBA title this season.
