A’ja Wilson does not run for her job? Seems like she lied when she made that remark because she is zooming past the league to sweep records. Hardly anyone would argue that she is IT! While Las Vegas’ record this season may not be the best proof to show it, the No. 22 is having arguably her best individual season to date.

As she continues to leave her mark on the sport’s history, the center inked her name in another record and now stands beside two of the greatest players in league history: Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart.

The Aces lost yet another Commissioner’s Cup game at the hands of the LA Sparks. But that did not put brakes on A’ja Wilson. She came out as the game’s leading scorer with 31 points. But long before the night was over, she picked up a record for herself. The 27-year-old made a three with 3:22 to go in the second quarter. With the bucket, she crossed the 4000-points mark in league history. Consequently, she became the third fastest WNBA player to reach the milestone.

Before the 2x WNBA champion, only Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart have garnered this accolade. Going by the numbers, tonight was the 198th game for the 2x MVP. The Mercury GOAT did it in her 197th game. Beating the two is Liberty’s Breanna Stewart to reach the 4000-point mark in just 196 games. A’ja Wilson stands atop 4016 career points and is 46th in the all-time leading scorer’s list. But seems like there is nothing stopping her as she keeps attaining more and more honors with every passing game.

A’ja Wilson and her damaging offense

The recently announced Olympian surely made a spot for herself this season. Chiney Ogwumike had previously acknowledged how A’ja Wilson keeps improving every year, but this seems to be her season and she is not letting anyone snatch it away. On Sunday, she left Diana Taurasi behind for the longest streak of 20+ point games.

The 42-year-old Phoenix star stands on 13 games which she logged in the 2006-07 season. But the 5x WNBA All-Star is now running with 14 such games. She is also averaging 28 points per clip, the highest in the league for the season. The 27-year-old also recorded her third straight game with 30 or more points with the matchup against LA going in the books. But that’s not it.

Wilson has added 28 or more points in a series of 5 games. This ties her with the Dallas Wings’ Arike Ogunbowale for the record in the league. Apart from scoring, she is also 7th in the league for double-doubles, tying with New York’s Jonquel Jones at 83. Adding more strength to the Aces is her defense that keeps the opponents at bay.

The 2× Defensive Player of the Year is not just making her name by dropping continuous double-digit scores. Her defense is as solid as any. She is the WNBA’s 3x blocks leader for a reason. Unsurprisingly, she is showing the same face again. On Sunday night against the LA Sparks, A’ja Wilson blocked a season-high 6 shots. Consequently, she is 15th all-time on the blocks list, currently topped by Tina Charles.

A’ja Wilson is currently tied with Erika DeSouza with 370 blocks. However, the season has just started and her average for the stat is not shabby at all. The hooper has blocked at least 1 shot in 18 straight games. This streak is the longest ongoing one in the league. However, she has a long way to reach the towering 6-ft-9 center of Phoenix– Brittney Griner.

The 9x WNBA All-Star Griner has a streak of 80 games with at least one shot that she has blocked. Currently, the Mercury star is leading the active players in the stat and is the third all-time leading blocker of the W with 769 blocks in her account. Additionally, Margo Dydek, who played for the franchise from 1998 to 2004 (Utah Starzz/ San Antonio Silver Stars) has a record for 36 such games. Dydek is also the all-time blocks leader in the WNBA.

A’ja Wilson is also sitting at the 38th spot in the WNBA all-time rebounds leader list. Over her 6 seasons in the league, she has garnered 1742 total rebounds. Out of these, 1368 are defensive rebounds, cementing her defense for the Aces.

Becky Hammon and her squad are on a three-peat mission. Going for yet another rare sight, the team has to be on its toes. A’ja Wilson’s presence in the team not only bolsters their chances of going for the third World Champion title but also makes this team one of the elite ones. Kate Martin mentioned how the veteran has the ultimate confidence in her and has leadership skills, unlike others. Keeping all this in mind, not many would argue that A’ja Wilson is leading the Aces in the right direction.
