Just nine days. That is all the time the Australian national team head coach Sandy Brondello has to find a replacement for a key piece of her national team’s FIBA World Cup roster. According to ESPN’s Megan Hustwaite, the Opals have suddenly been forced into a frantic search for a replacement following the news of their team captain withdrawing from the contest.

Hustwaite revealed that Sami Whitcomb withdrew from the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup because of an ongoing knee injury. The 38-year-old Phoenix Mercury guard was expected to lead Australia into the tournament after starring during World Cup qualifying, but her knee has ultimately forced her to step away.
Whitcomb originally hurt her left knee during a Mercury practice session in May 2026. She then underwent arthroscopic surgery, which delayed her WNBA season debut until July 9. Specifically, the injury completely sidelined her for the first two months of the campaign, ultimately forcing her to miss 22 consecutive games for the Phoenix Mercury. And even when she eventually returned to the court, she was playing through pain and, as a result, has been limited to just 16.4 minutes per game.
There was also ongoing medical management of her knee even as she continued playing with severely hampered court time and availability. Ultimately, all of that has led Whitcomb to make the difficult decision to step down as captain and withdraw from the 2026 FIBA World Cup.
Sami Whitcomb’s withdrawal will indeed be a major blow for the Australian side heading into the tournament. The 38-year-old guard is the team’s veteran leader and an elite scorer. In March, during the 2026 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul, Türkiye, Whitcomb earned tournament MVP honors after delivering a masterful performance that carried the undefeated Opals to a 5-0 record through the competition. That level of performance and production is what Australian national head coach Sandy Brondello now has less than 10 days to replace before their opening game.

While Brondello will most likely be considering possible replacements to take Whitcomb’s spot in the squad, it will likely fall to young guards already on the roster, like Seattle Storm’s Jade Melbourne and Atlanta Dream’s Isobel Borlase, who will now have to handle much larger creative roles to absorb Whitcomb’s high production.
However, when it comes to actually replacing Whitcomb’s spot on the roster, Brondello may have to consider any of Maddi Rocci, Amy Atwell, Abbey Ellis, or Washington Mystics rookie guard Georgia Amoore. But regardless of what choice she eventually makes, it is difficult to escape this feeling that it will be difficult to fill the void that Sami Whitcomb’s departure has now left in the team.
The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is scheduled to run from September 4 to September 13, 2026, in Berlin. Australia is placed in Group C and is scheduled to kick off its journey against Puerto Rico on September 4, before facing Türkiye and Belgium in the group stage.
