Caitlin Clark’s historic performance against the Seattle Storm on Friday (July 17) raised the bar for the Indiana Fever. The star guard became the first player in WNBA history to record 40-plus points and 10-plus assists in a game, leading Indiana to a thrilling 110-107 victory. With the Fever back in action against the New York Liberty just 24 hours later at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, anticipation was sky-high. Among those in attendance was a special guest, Dr. Mathew Knowles, the father of global music icon Beyoncé.

The Fever made sure fans didn’t miss it, posting on Instagram: “Beyoncé’s father, Dr. Mathew Knowles, is courtside tonight at @gainbridgefieldhouse 🙌.”

The Fever’s Instagram post showed Dr. Mathew Knowles sitting courtside in the front row alongside Dr. Virginia Caine, director and chief medical officer of the Marion County Public Health Department. With smiles all around, the atmosphere inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse was already high before tip-off.

Meanwhile, Indiana made sure the excitement carried onto the court. The Fever dominated the defending champion New York Liberty 108-88, delivering one of their most complete performances of the season. Kelsey Mitchell led the charge with 33 points in just 30 minutes, while Caitlin Clark added 17 points in 26 minutes. Just as they had against Seattle a night earlier, the All-Star backcourt accounted for a huge share of Indiana’s offense.

New York had no answer. Breanna Stewart did her best to keep the Liberty in the game with 26 points, but Sabrina Ionescu struggled to find her rhythm, finishing with just 12 points in 34 minutes. As the margin continued to grow, fans on social media couldn’t resist joking about Knowles’ presence.

One X user quipped, “They can’t play badly in front of Beyonce’s dad!”

Notably, the Liberty may have left Indianapolis with another frustrating loss, but the Fever made the most of the spotlight. And that wasn’t the end of the online reaction. Dr. Knowles’ courtside appearance sparked plenty more comments across Instagram and X, with fans having fun over the celebrity cameo.

WNBA fan spots referee issue after Indiana Fever’s victory

Knowles’ courtside appearance quickly became a talking point online. Under the Fever’s post on X, one fan joked, “Please ask him if he wants to referee. He couldn’t possibly be as bad as the ones on the court now.”

Nonetheless, the frustration stemmed from an incident early in the first quarter. Jonquel Jones appeared to set a hard screen on Caitlin Clark, freeing Marine Johannès for an open three-pointer. Clark immediately argued that the screen was illegal, but the officials let the play continue. Her reaction earned her a technical foul.

That technical carried extra weight. It was Clark’s sixth of the season, triggering an automatic $1,000 fine under the WNBA’s escalating disciplinary policy. It also leaves her just two technical fouls away from an automatic one-game suspension. Fans kept the jokes coming.

One wrote, “Sorry you have to witness this Mr. Beyoncé.”

Another focused on Knowles’ courtside posture, saying, “Even beyonces dad, a whole doctor, sits like only his leg space matters lol.” There was nothing unusual about the way he was sitting, but the comment still caught attention.

Meanwhile, another fan added, “He could have picked any WNBA team to go to and he chose this one.”

In reality, Knowles has been a supporter of the WNBA for years. Back in 2024, after attending a Chicago Sky game against the Los Angeles Sparks, he shared his experience on social media, writing, “On Saturday, I had a unique experience sitting courtside right next to the team’s bench during the Chicago Sky’s game against the LA Sparks. Investing in the WNBA’s Chicago Sky has been thrilling, reminiscent of Destiny’s Child.”

Two years later, another Saturday at a WNBA arena put Knowles back in the spotlight. This time, though, it wasn’t just the Fever’s dominant win that had fans talking; it was the unexpected whirl surrounding Beyoncé’s father throughout the night.
