The festivities have begun in the USA camp after their 14-point comeback win against France in the FIBA World Cup final. The champagne bottles have been uncorked, but it seems that Caitlin Clark, playing in her first World Cup, apparently did not get the full memo. A clip of the guard is doing the rounds on social media, in which she brings upon herself a comical experience while celebrating, prompting a reaction from her long-term boyfriend as well.

“I sprayed myself in the face on accident,” read the caption on Clark’s Instagram story, as she reposted a clip from Overtime WBB that shows her with a champagne bottle, celebrating Team USA’s World Cup win in the locker room.

The clip rightly mentions that “someone get Caitlin some goggles smh 🤣,” as Clark forgets to put on the goggles and ends up spraying herself, much to the amusement of her fans. Even her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, simply could not pass up this chance and joined in, sharing the same clip featuring Clark again on his Instagram.

The couple have been dating since April 2023 and eventually made it official on Instagram in August that year. Clark and McCaffery met while they were both at the University of Iowa. McCaffery has previously played college basketball and is pursuing a career in basketball coaching at Butler University in Indianapolis.

He has also previously served as the Basketball Development Coordinator for the Indiana Pacers for the 2023-24 season. When he is not coaching, he is usually supporting Clark at Indiana Fever games or sharing moments from the couple’s life on Instagram. McCaffery wouldn’t miss a chance to repost the video of Clark on his story.

However, Clark wouldn’t mind a little champagne in the face after a game as intense as the 2026 FIBA finals, as she and Team USA took on France. At the end of the second quarter, Team USA found itself trailing France by two points at 45-43, and it looked like USA’s dream of winning five straight World Cup titles would go unfulfilled.

But the pivotal moment of the game came when USA head coach Kara Lawson decided to sub in Clark just as the second quarter was ending.

While Clark may not have finished the final as the USA’s top scorer, it was her deep three right at the end of the second quarter that turned out to change the momentum of the game in favor of the Americans, as the USA took charge in the second half, completely erasing their 14-point deficit and taking a commanding lead going into the fourth quarter.

Coach Kara Lawson herself acknowledged the significance of this moment after the game.

“We had such a resilient mindset (in the second quarter)… Big momentum-changing three for (Caitlin Clark) right before halftime. We just felt it at halftime. We really did. We felt like we could push the gas pedal down to the floor and get away from them,” Lawson said in the post-game press conference, per FIBA’s YouTube channel.

“I’m so proud of their performances tonight, in the biggest of moments. The plays that Caitlin made, the plays that Rhyne Howard made, the plays that Angel Reese made. I mean, Aliyah Boston — how great was she last night and tonight?”

Caitlin Clark finished the night with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and added three assists and a rebound as well. Her impact was undeniable, as across just 13 minutes on the floor, she had a +11 plus/minus rating.

Clark capped off the World Cup atop Team USA’s leaderboard in assists, serving as one of the primary engines for an American squad that consistently outclassed opponents whenever she was on the floor.
