In the 2025 season, Mabrey got into the thick of it during the game between the Connecticut Sun and the Indiana Fever. The 29-year-old ended up shoving Caitlin Clark to the ground in a chain of events that started with her teammate Jacy Sheldon poking the Fever guard in the eye.
Mabrey has finally admitted to overreacting to the situation during the game by shoving Caitlin. Speaking to Sue Bird, Mabrey highlighted how the reaction was a result of the frustration of trailing the Fever, especially with Caitlin balling out, adding to her emotions.
“I know when I went too far with things, and it’s shameful. It’s like, really, Marina, that was ridiculous. So, for example, the Caitlin thing. When the play was over, and everyone was like, that was obvious that my emotions of us losing and losing and losing, and then she’s like low-key punking our team on top of it, like that was too far.”
Caitlin Clark was dominating the 2025 season before getting injured. The Indiana Fever guard was coming into the Connecticut Sun game after knocking down 32 points in 31 minutes against the New York Liberty. Connecticut ended up losing by 17 points in what became one of the most heated games of the season.

Marina Mabrey seems to be aware of where the line needs to be drawn now. Unrivaled has seen the competitive side of her as well, with the scuffle against Sug Sutton, where the 29-year-old pushed Sug after the whistle. But Mabrey highlighted how that was different, and they often needed such minor incidents to fire up the team and the crowd. In contrast, the incident against the Fever only ended with them losing the game by 17 points and being booed by the fans.
Mabrey is trying to put the incident behind her as she ponders the next move in her career. She will be testing Free Agency in 2026, and it will be interesting to see which WNBA franchises line up to add the fiery wing to their roster.
Marina Mabrey could be in tremendous demand during the 2026 Free Agency
The Lunar Owls star is currently busy with her Unrivaled duties as the moratorium continues, while the CBA negotiations take center stage. However, she was in the final year of her Connecticut Sun contract, which means she will enter Free Agency as an unrestricted free agent.
The Connecticut Sun could be tempted to re-sign the 29-year-old. However, Mabrey had initially asked for a trade last year, and there is a high chance she would look at other options before thinking of returning to Connecticut.
The two new expansion teams could look at Mabrey as a valuable veteran option who can also contribute to perimeter shooting while adding that experience to their new roster.
Mabrey’s former team, the Los Angeles Sparks, has a budding young core and could look into facilitating the 29-year-old’s return to the LA market to add experience to their youthful roster.
Marina Mabrey has been part of four different franchises in the WNBA since being drafted in 2019 by the Los Angeles Sparks. A former NCAAW champion, the ever-competitive Mabrey has not been part of a roster that is a genuine contender for the WNBA title. However, she could finally get that chance, as the contenders Minnesota Lynx, look to bolster their perimeter shooting.
Mabrey is likely to have a lot of options, and it will be intriguing to see where she takes her skills once the teams are allowed to negotiate and sign Free Agents before the 2026 season.
