Who is the face of the WNBA? That question, oftentimes more than not, is usually met with two answers: A’ja Wilson or Caitlin Clark. For WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, it is none other than A’ja Wilson. But WNBA analyst Caroline Fenton disagrees.

“I will pass on A’ja Wilson being the face of the WNBA,” Fenton said, speaking on Wednesday’s episode of the Yahoo Sports Daily. “Caitlin Clark is the face of the WNBA. Caitlin Clark sells out arenas. And Caitlin Clark gets more eyeballs on her games than any other player gets on theirs. Whether it’s in the arena or on TV. Everything she touches turns to gold. Caitlin Clark is the most recognizable player in the WNBA. And I would even venture to say one of the most recognizable women’s athletes and athletes period. It’s Caitlin Clark.”

For Fenton, it is not even a debate. According to her, Caitlin Clark has done quite a lot to earn the title of the face of the WNBA. Her coming into the league significantly changed the dynamics for a league that A’ja Wilson was already in. Viewership, visibility, and finances all shot up.
Moreover, the case she makes is not only on the commercial side. She is also a very good player, one who has been shattering records since entering the league and continues to deliver brilliance every day.
But then, Lisa Leslie’s argument, which she made recently after A’ja Wilson’s impressive 30-point performance against the Chicago Sky, is also not without merit. Three WNBA championships, four WNBA MVPs, two WNBA Finals MVPs, three WNBA Defensive Player of the Year awards, and a long list of several other accolades. These, in addition to her continued dominant performances season in and season out. Wilson really does have every case to be made for being the face of the WNBA.
And so, if not the face of the league, Fenton will gladly hand A’ja Wilson the title of the league’s best player.
“A’ja Wilson is the best player on the planet,” she said. “A’ja Wilson isn’t even 30 years old yet. And she’s already on my Mount Rushmore of greatest players to ever play in the WNBA. So A’ja Wilson’s the best player.”
But, as it appears, for Fenton, there is a real difference between being the face of the WNBA and being the WNBA’s best player.
In fact, for her, if she were to put together a team for a must-win game, A’ja Wilson is a must-have player. That again, Wilson has proven to be true over and over again, in the different times she has almost singlehandedly turned games around and won them for the Aces.
