Announcement

The 2025 WNBA season has been anything but predictable for the Indiana Fever. After locking in their core and going shopping in the offseason for seasoned talent like Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Howard, hopes were sky-high. But instead of a smooth march, the Fever have been stuck on a seesaw, balancing wins and losses and always hovering around a .500 winning percentage. Injuries didn’t help, of course, especially when they involved Caitlin Clark, aka the face of the franchise and the league. The star guard battled through two different injuries, and with her sidelined at times, the Fever’s rhythm looked absolutely lost. And then there was, well, the Bonner Situation.

DeWanna Bonner, a six-time All-Star and one of the Fever’s biggest offseason moves, was supposed to be a game-changer. Instead, she mysteriously exited stage left after just nine games, citing “personal reasons”. A few days later, reports whispered what fans were already tweeting in all caps: Bonner was not planning to return. And if anyone thought Coach Stephanie White would provide clarity, they were in for more cryptic confusion. “I haven’t had a lot of conversations with her,” she said, just days after saying, “Give her the time she needs.” So, yes, everyone was left scratching their heads until the saga wrapped up with a not-so-grand finale. Bonner was officially waived, bringing a dramatic end to a union that barely got through act one.

Now, you would think the rumor mill would finally take a much-needed break after that? Think again. This time around, the rumors are regarding Brianna Turner. With Brianna Turner averaging just 4.1 minutes per game this season, and speculations surrounding Emma Meesaman’s potential return to the W, there is a lot of chatter regarding Turner being waived. Reacting to the same, Rachel DeMita gave her take on the situation. Speaking on her YouTube channel, she said, “with Brie Turner’s minutes, even with the shirt that she had, it it said it’s business. And I don’t know if that was just about the WNBAPA CBA negotiations or if it had a deeper meaning to it. I just I guess I wouldn’t be surprised if she was waved“.

Well, the rumors began during the time of midseason cuts, and more specifically, before Indiana’s game with the Valkyries. When the team announced that Turner wouldn’t be showing up to a scheduled fan meet-and-greet before the Valkyries game, fans on social media did what they do best. What probably was a simple “she’s not coming” quickly spiraled into wild theories, even though the graphic for the event, which listed Lexie Hull and Turner, clearly stated: “players subject to change”. Then there is the fact that Brianna’s minutes have decreased ever since Clark and Damiris Dantas returned. Adding to all that is a T-shirt Brianna wore with the words “It’s business” that sent the fans into a frenzy.

But, as DeMita hinted, the T-shirt could simply be related to the negotiations instead of being a subtle message about internal team dynamics. However, DeMita also gave her opinion on what the Indiana Fever needs to do at this point in the season. She said,” What the Indiana Fever needs the most is to hone in on their identity, hone in on Fever basketball which is playing fast, playing with pace, playing unselfishly, moving the ball around, hitting the open threes when you have them. Those are the things and putting back-to-back wins together. Like, that what’s the Fever needs to focus on and not just trying to getting in new pieces and seeing if it works and see if it sticks.”

Rachel DeMita insisted that the Indiana Fever had already had too many changes in their roster. Unless there is a big game-changing player available, they should not make any more roster moves. Another factor that might deter the Fever from making moves is the passing of the Mid-Season Cut Deadline on July 13. Any unprotected contracts waived right now would have salary cap implications.

Even if the Fever are not where they want to be at this point in the season, they have shown that they are capable of turning the situation around. After all, with this very core, the Fever had the winning record for the first time in five years in 2024 and made the playoffs. So, DeMita believes that if the Fever stay true to their style of play and avoid additional injuries, their current talent is sufficient to make a deep playoff run.

Caitlin Clark will find her groove

The first half of the 2025 WNBA season has not been kind to Caitlin Clark’s fans. With her team struggling to meet pre-season expectations and her missing almost half the games, things have been tough. But things might just turn around. Firstly, the Fever faithful got to experience championship highs with the Fever winning the Commissioner’s Cup. Secondly, Caitlin Clark is back, and the team is thriving. With CC coming back from her groin injury, the Indiana Fever are on a 2 game win streak. While a 2-game streak may not seem like a lot, the way they have won these games has shown a lot. And sure, Clark’s shooting has been dismal, but the way she has been impacting the court cannot go unnoticed – just consider her 13 assists against the Wings.

And as Stephanie White said, we need to have some patience. “I just want her to have a little bit of patience, to give herself a little bit of grace, and to still do the other things that she does so well in the game that affect winning,” White said, via the Indianapolis Star. “Because yes, she’s an elite shooter. Yes, that’s what everybody wants to see. But she makes other winning plays, and she can control those things, and control the things that you can control, continue to work through the rhythm, the timing, the strength, the endurance, and it’s going to come.”
