If there’s one thing Caitlin Clark is known for besides her talent, it’s her personality. While former/current coaches, friends and teammates often describe the Indiana Fever star as being “fun, playful and a little sarcastic”, Clark’s quiet confidence and reservedness on the court hint at mostly the opposite. Perhaps Clark is overly aware of how many eyes are on her. Or perhaps, in a league where she’s part of most conversations, her low-key personality is an effort to stay grounded. Unfortunately, though, sometimes efforts like these do more harm than good.

As the 23-year-old turned up at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse—battling through another groin injury and an unceremonious WNBA All-Star Game absence—she also brought along fanfare as expected. But also present was a very important part of her personal life: Her boyfriend and assistant basketball coach at Butler University, Connor McCaffery. Notably, the couple has been dating since April 2023, and are often seen in PDA-packed moments (but only on social media). So what happens when the duo is caught in a rare camera encounter? Well, things get awkward, as pointed out by social media users.

On July 18, Yahoo Sports shared what was supposed to be a wholesome moment between the 2024 ROTY and her boyfriend. Captioned, “Caitlin Clark and her mans at WNBA All-Star Friday ❤️”, the video showed Clark, dressed in an ab-flaunting top, khaki cargo pants and white stilettos, walking toward McCaffery. However, as the duo came in close contact, the boyfriend appeared to be leaning in for a kiss. At that very instant, Clark seemingly swerved her head, with McCaffrey dropping the kiss on the side of his girlfriend’s head instead. The three-second encounter, thus, ended up being named as “kiss diss”. What’s more?

The couple’s cute moments have been captured on camera before, like the one when Caitlin Clark hugged Connor after getting selected for the 2024 All-Star game. Yet, this time, for some fans, it was just a little brow-raising.

The romance standards are high for Caitlin Clark’s fans

“Lmfaoooo does she even like him?” one fan outrightly concluded, while another wrote, “She’s not that into him.” Some didn’t even call it close to a romance, commenting, “That was a warm greeting lol.”

What’s your perspective on:

Caitlin Clark's 'kiss diss'—a sign of relationship trouble or just a camera-shy moment?

Have an interesting take?

Not exactly Coldplay concert level loving,” read one reaction, roping in the recent Astronomer-Coldplay controversy. Another X user also decided to jump on the trend as they mentioned, “I mean I was going to say they need Coldplay type couples therapy to bring that everlasting passion into their lives!”

Truth be told, it’s not like the Clark and McCaffery don’t have their sweet moments. Just before her injury, they celebrated McCaffery’s birthday together, and Clark had the sweetest message for him. “Happy happy happy birthday Con🥳 you make everyday better and I couldn’t be more grateful,” she toasted to him last Sunday. “May this be the best year yet, i love you 🖤🖤.”

Hence, at least some tried to be understanding despite the awkwardness. Though sentiments like, “Right?! That was sort of awkward, lol. She might have been embarrassed though. Gotta remember she’s pretty young,” were in short supply.
