Enes Kanter Freedom declared his intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft to challenge the league’s eligibility criteria. The former basketball player has shown up at WNBA games, gotten into a verbal altercation with a player, and even been banned from the Chicago Sky’s arena. But almost a month after his announcement, he has shown no plans to back down from the discourse surrounding transgender players in women’s sports that has gripped the women’s basketball league. And amid the whole mess, he now has a notable supporter in his corner – Colorado congresswoman Lauren Boebert.

In a recent interview with TMZ, Boebert was asked whether she sees Kanter Freedom as a hero for taking on the WNBA or simply as someone seeking attention, pointing to him showing up at the Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky game. In her response, the Republican politician couldn’t help but back him.

“I think it’s calling the idiocy out. When he was on the WNBA floor, and these female players were going after him, I was like, ‘This is like quite a catfight. These two women just going at it,'” she said, before adding that she hopes Kanter Freedom actually gets the opportunity to enter the WNBA so she can “bet on his games.”

Enes Kanter Freedom has been one of the most vocal figures to call out the WNBA’s eligibility criteria after Sophie Cunningham’s stance on protecting young girls in the locker room went viral.

The WNBA collective bargaining agreement states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” But there is no further clarity on whether that means a biological woman or someone who identifies as a woman. The league also has no publicly available policy governing the eligibility of transgender or intersex athletes. And that has been at the center of the argument for players like Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who have declared their intentions to play in the league.

Now, multiple sources close to this issue have already claimed that these players are not eligible for the WNBA’s next draft and will not be allowed to play. But they have rejected the reports because there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the league.

So, as everything continues to spiral, Enes Kanter Freedom has taken his fight directly to league commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Taking to X, the former Boston Celtics player offered a “peace summit” to Engelbert and the WNBA task force.

“WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the @WNBA task force, I am now speaking directly to you,” he wrote. “I’m going to keep this short and sweet, so open your ears and listen carefully. I would like to offer you a peace summit, moderated by my friend @Caitlyn_Jenner. I’ve already spoken with her, and she’s in.”

“I’m not a troublemaker. I’m more of a peacemaker. Listen, The whole world is laughing at you. You have turned the #WNBA into a laughingstock. It’s time to stop hiding behind closed-door meetings, excuses, and delays and finally give the public a clear answer. Let’s have the peace summit.”

“No shouting. No hiding. No carefully scripted statements. Let’s sit across the table from each other, have an open and respectful conversation, and address the questions millions of people are asking. Let’s put everything on the table and let the public hear both sides. If you truly believe in your position, you should have no problem defending it publicly. So, Commissioner Engelbert and the WNBA task force, the invitation is officially on the table. Name the time. Name the place. Let’s talk. Are you in?” he further added.

The WNBA has already once condemned “bad-faith efforts” to use this topic to “demean or marginalize others” when a task force met on August 12. So, whether Cathy Engelbert is willing to accept this challenge from Enes Kanter Freedom is another question. But so far, there is no indication that the league has any intentions of sitting down with the former NBA player.

Boebert, however, believes there is a simple way for the WNBA to put an end to the debate.

“Well, it’s very simple. Have the WNBA tell us what a woman is. Have them define it, and then we won’t have this issue,” she further added.

For now, Enes Kanter Freedom’s latest challenge leaves the ball firmly in the WNBA’s court. And with Boebert now publicly backing his motives and Kanter Freedom continuing to demand a direct answer from Engelbert, the debate shows little sign of fading away anytime soon.
