One of the biggest surprises in the WNBA season so far? The way the Chicago Sky are playing. Coming into the year, the talk was all about their young core of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, and how the veterans brought in would help guide their growth. With additions like Rebecca Allen, Courtney Vandersloot, and Ariel Atkins, the Sky looked like a team aiming to build slowly while staying competitive enough to chase a playoff spot. But starting the season 1-4 hasn’t exactly inspired confidence. And now, analysts are starting to dig deeper. From game plans to player rotations, they’ve been vocal about what’s not clicking and what needs to change if the Sky are going to get back on track.

Life under new head coach Tyler Marsh hasn’t been smooth for the Sky. Within the first 10 days, they already had four losses on the board,  two of them heavy defeats to the Fever and Liberty. One glaring issue? Defense. Chicago has struggled big time on that end, posting the worst defensive rating in the league at 113.6. They’re giving up a league-high 94.3 points per game and are the only team yet to hold an opponent under 90. Even in their win against the Wings, they still allowed 92 points.

Ros Gold-Onwude, on the Good Follow podcast, highlighted some key areas the Sky need to address.  She said, “There’s just some very simple things that stand out for the Sky that they can do. It has to start with defense. In three games, teams are averaging 94 points per game against the Sky. Also, they are struggling offensively, right? So you really have to make every easier opportunity count. They’re giving up 19 turnovers a game. You’ve got to value the ball. Also, those turnovers often end up to be run-outs, momentum plays for the other team.”

In their first four games of the season, the Sky committed a staggering 79 turnovers. That’s nearly 20 per game. Coming into the season, the team made a bold decision to prioritize defense, even letting go of their top scorer, Chennedy Carter, to focus more on developing Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. But so far, that shift hasn’t paid off.

While the Sky did manage to bring the turnovers down to 14 in their win over the Dallas Wings, it’s worth noting that Dallas isn’t exactly seen as a playoff threat. Even then, Chicago allowed the Wings to shoot 51% from the field. Clearly, there’s still a lot of work ahead for Coach Tyler Marsh if he wants to meet the expectations fans have for this team.

That said, Angel Reese hit another milestone during her first win of the 2025 WNBA season. Let’s take a closer look at that achievement!

Angel Reese makes WNBA history

Kamila Cardoso’s 23-point, 8-rebound performance carried the Chicago Sky to their first win of the 2025 W season,  a 97-92 victory over the Dallas Wings at Wintrust Arena. It wasn’t just Cardoso who shined! Angel Reese contributed with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists, including a clutch assist late in the fourth quarter that gave the Sky the lead. A performance to be pleased about!

Reese’s stat line tells only half the story. The expectations on her are sky-high after her NCAA stardom, and she’s feeling the weight. In the Chicago Sky’s 97-92 win over the Dallas Wings on May 29, 2025, Reese recorded six points, nine rebounds, and five assists . Her performance underscores the ongoing discussion about her role and development in the professional league.

While Reese continues to rewrite the record books with every outing, the focus now shifts to the Chicago Sky maintaining their momentum. They’ll go up against the Wings once again in their next game, and it wouldn’t be a shock if they extend their record to 2-4. But to make that happen, the Sky will need to bring their A-game once more. Stay tuned to see if this sparks the start of a winning streak for Chicago!
