The Chicago Sky’s decision to trade up for Angel Reese in the 2024 draft? That move is aging like fine wine. Reese has become the core of Chicago’s lineup. She is piling up double-doubles, earning All-Star recognition, and generating serious buzz. But here’s the wild part: she only landed with the Sky because of a bold draft-day trade with the Minnesota Lynx.

Meanwhile, the Lynx? They just waived their 2024 No. 8 pick, Alissa Pili, right before tonight’s game. Pili had mostly been sitting out due to technical decisions, but still, the difference is stark. Now, these two teams are set to clash with more than pride at stake. They’re tied 2-2 across all matchups this year, including preseason and regular season games. They are bound to go all out for this one to tip the scales in favor; it’ll be a close one.

So let’s break it down for you…

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Lynx make a colossal mistake trading Reese, or is it just a rough patch?

Have an interesting take?

  • Courtney Vandersloot: Out (ACL surgery)

Courtney Vandersloot tore her ACL on June 7 and is done for the season. Earlier, her absence had been weighing heavily on Chicago, who now seems to have found the rhythm. Another good news is that she had a successful ACL surgery, as Sky announced last Tuesday.

Minnesota Lynx:

  • Karlie Samuelson: Out (foot)

Right before the Lynx’s Commissioner’s Cup final against the Fever, Samuelson was ruled out due to a foot injury. She went down during the second quarter of their game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, June 29. It all happened within just 3:19 minutes of playing.

Will the Chicago Sky Pull it off Again?

The Minnesota Lynx might look like the stronger team on paper, with a 73% chance of winning according to ESPN. But Monday’s matchup against the Chicago Sky won’t be a walk in the park for them. The Lynx are 18-4, and Collier is playing at an MVP level, and they have undoubtedly been flawless at home. However, Chicago isn’t paying attention to the odds.

The last time these two faced off, the Sky were given just a 26% chance to win. They proved the doubters wrong. Ariel Atkins exploded for 27 points, while both Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso notched double-doubles in a hard-fought 87-81 victory. Chicago’s biggest struggle this season has been consistency (especially against teams above .500), but they’re starting to turn a corner in that regard, riding on a two-game win streak. Angel Reese is on an eight-game double-double streak, and Cardoso’s career-high performance last game exposed cracks in the Lynx’s frontcourt dominance.

That said, Minnesota doesn’t stay down for long. They have lost two of their last three games in their first rough patch of the season, but even in those losses, Collier has been a two-way force. Her supporting cast, including Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams, will be eager to bounce back and retake control of the season series.

The Chicago Sky have already shown they can pull off an upset, but beating the Lynx twice in four days? That’s a much tougher ask than it looks on paper. Expect another close battle, but Minnesota will likely come in with a chip on their shoulder and a revenge mindset.
