Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh has quite a history with the Las Vegas Aces, the very team he’s now leading his Sky squad against twice within the space of a week. If there’s one player on that Aces roster he knows especially well, it’s Jackie Young. And ahead of their second meeting on Friday night, Marsh made some interesting and funny revelations about the Aces guard, shedding light on a side of her personality that many fans might not be familiar with.

Jackie Young is not a player known for trash-talking. In fact, unlike some of the more vocal personalities on the Aces, such as A’ja Wilson, she’s generally regarded as one of the more reserved players on the court. However, last season, fans got to see that trash-talking side of her when she went viral in a widely shared clip showing her playfully talking trash to her former assistant head coach. As it turns out, that’s something Coach Tyler Marsh has experienced plenty of during all the years they spent together with the Aces.
“…that’s the relationship that we’ve been able to build over the years,” Coach Marsh said in an interview ahead of their Friday night game, a video of which was shared by Chicago State of Mind Sports on X. “We’ve had tons of individual workouts and practices and post-shoot-arounds and post-practices where we play one-on-ones. And I’ve had to be on the receiving end of those. Now, she’s a great player, she’s a great person. And I’m sure she gets up for this game, and she gets up for every game.”
That viral in-game trash-talking moment came during a game last season when Jackie Young knocked down a clutch three-pointer right in front of the opposing Chicago Sky bench. That bench, of course, included Tyler Marsh, her former assistant head coach, who was now sitting on the opposing sideline. After making the shot, Young turned directly toward the bench and playfully talked trash. That action sparked laughter and immediate reactions online, perhaps because of her typically quiet demeanor. Or maybe just because she was trash-talking her former coach.
Coach Tyler Marsh worked with the Las Vegas Aces for three seasons from 2022 to 2024. During that span, he had the opportunity to work closely with Jackie Young. Many even credit him for helping transform her into an elite three-point shooter and the WNBA’s Most Improved Player in 2022. As it turns out, all those years they spent together included plenty of lighthearted banter, something they briefly revisited during that memorable game last season.
There wasn’t another notable viral trash-talking moment in their most recent meeting, where the Aces defeated the Sky 107-99. But just as Tyler Marsh said, Young certainly got up for the game. She finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Perhaps fans will still get to see more of those playful banter and trash-talking moments, as there’s still another Aces-Sky matchup remaining this season, even after Friday night’s meeting.
Tyler Marsh Names Jackie Young a ‘Top Three to Five Talent’
As far as Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh is concerned, Jackie Young is one of the top three to five players in the WNBA at the moment. In fact, in Marsh’s view, it’s not just within the WNBA. She’s one of the top three to five talents in the world at large.
Speaking in an interview ahead of their Friday night game, a video of which Ballers Magazine shared on YouTube, Marsh gave quite the endorsement of his former player, highlighting the complete package she brings every time she steps on the floor.
“I think just the combination of strength and speed and size and skill. It’s just she’s there; there’s no weakness to her game,” he said. “She can hurt you. She can hurt you, obviously, as a scorer. And then you know that’s before you get to the defensive end. She’s able to impact the game from that standpoint and guard multiple positions. And so, she’s a top three-to-five talent in this league, in the world, really. She presents challenges across the board.”
It’s safe to say that Jackie Young proved every bit of that statement right when the Las Vegas Aces defeated Tyler Marsh’s Chicago Sky 107-99. Perhaps Marsh will be hoping she proves him wrong, at least every time their teams face each other.
