Kelsey Mitchell has given everything to the Fever. Now she’s questioning whether the fanbase has given anything back. Kelsey Mitchell has been a Fever cornerstone since the 2018 draft, having worn nothing but the Fever’s red and blue. As Mitchell enters free agency this season, she just revealed the cost of playing in a fanbase that doesn’t always embrace her. And this could have long-standing implications for her future with the team.

Kelsey Mitchell recently opened up about the weight of being on the Fever roster when she is not certain of the fan sentiment around her. The interview, on the Fever YouTube channel, was posted after the Indiana Fever-Las Vegas Aces playoff series ended with the Fever being knocked out.

“So I think we as players endure a lot that people don’t necessarily really understand about, like showing up every day to compete for fans that may or may not like you, is hard,” Mitchell said.

“I don’t think people understand that I think having to show up for people that don’t look at you and have the eyes, the star eyes, when they see me, but playing with [Caitlin Clark] and having the eyes that she got, we get a lot of flak just for being on her team, and so I think that that comes with a lot too,” she added.

Fever fans are nothing if not passionate about their team. But sometimes, that passion can outweigh a player’s well-being as the pressure to perform for the fans might become too much to handle. Mitchell understands this well and opened up about the extra pressure that comes with being an Indiana Fever player.

“Yeah, it was tough. I think that the hardest part about being a Fever girl, especially. Obviously, you guys know I’ve been a part of it a long time, but the last couple of years, I think I don’t think people really understand how much we endure, man… If I showed y’all my DMs about the hate and all of the stuff that comes with being a professional athlete. But specifically being an Indiana Fever basketball player,” she said.

Indiana Fever Amber Cox recently defended her team’s fanbase as criticism mounted against them after the infamous incident involving A’ja Wilson in Game 2 of the first-round series between the Fever and the Aces. However, this take from one of their own players, who is also their leading scorer this season, should be an eye-opener.

“It’s a lot that goes into that, and those days are hard as hell, man, because we wake up every day, giving our best, and unfortunately, to some of the people in the world and to the fans of the world, the basketball world,… you’re not gonna give your best all the time, and that’s not enough for people,” Mitchell added.

Kelsey Mitchell has been a beacon of consistency for the Fever this season. She broke A’ja Wilson’s record for most points in a season(1,021 in 2024), finishing with 1,086 points, and has finished the regular season with 24.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season. She even led the postseason scoring effort, averaging a team-leading 20.9 PPG over the three-game Las Vegas Aces series. The regular season saw her perform even better, finishing second on the average points leaderboard just behind A’ja Wilson.

Mitchell’s latest contract was a $1.4 million supermax agreement for the 2026 season. She will now enter free agency as the season comes to a close, and her exit interview raises serious questions about whether she will re-sign with the Fever in 2027.

The Fever management would do well to pay attention to her comments if they intend to keep her on the team.
