The COVID-19 pandemic hurt the WNBA in many ways, but the most affected seems to be the Connecticut Sun’s guard. Despite impressive collegiate stats with a GP of 135, DiJonai Carrington waited too long, as no team was willing to select her. However, a ray of hope came for NFL star Darren Carrington’s daughter when Curt Miller picked her up as the 20th pick. Nearly three years later, Carrington is taking redemption from WNBA teams that missed out on her during the 2021 draft.

This means something to me, for real. I’ve overcome a lot. Respectfully, every single team in the draft had an opportunity to draft me and passed (some, 3 & 4 times) except Connecticut. Shoutout to @coachcurtmiller & my vets for believing. I promise this is just the beginning though for me,” penned Connecticut Sun’s guard on her official X account.

In 2021, Carrington attended Connecticut Sun’s training camp and earned her spot on the team’s roster. Despite her caliber, she never got any other team’s attention. But not anymore! Since the beginning of this WNBA season, DiJonai Carrington has been rocking the stats. This regular season, Carrington averaged 12.9 points per game with a total of 297 points so far.

Even in the last game versus New York Liberty, she grabbed 36 boards while notching 10 assists. She’s also estimated to be the Defensive Player of the Year due to her impressive on-court performance featuring 5.1 rebounds per game. But still, all these stats aren’t enough to garner the WNBA’s attention towards her!

Fierce competition amid championship chase

Since it’s already halfway through the 2024 regular season, the All-Star and Team USA rosters have already been revealed. And Connecticut Sun’s guard isn’t on either of them. Though she’s among the best contenders on the Sun’s team, she’s not able to overcome intense competition from players like Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark, and A’ja Wilson.

Despite being in their rookie season, Angel Reese is maintaining an impressive double-double streak in every match. Caitlin Clark, on the other hand, reigns with the first triple-double in the history of the women’s basketball league. However, Carrington hasn’t accomplished any such feat until now. But it seems soon these stats could change.
