It’s the Washington Mystics vs. Connecticut Sun time again, and if their last matchup on the 19th is anything to go by, the fans are in for a show. The Sun pulled off an 80-69 win, ending a brutal 13-game road losing streak. Saniya Rivers dropped 17 points, Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 15 points and 9 boards, while the Mystics’ Sonia Citron led her team with 19 points — breaking Chamique Holdsclaw’s rookie scoring record along the way. Connecticut started the second quarter hot with a 10-2 run and never really looked back, even stretching the lead to 16 in the third.
With the Sun are already eliminated from playoff contention, their current focus is on developing young talent and building for the future. Connecticut (7-27) is in full rebuild mode under a first-year head coach, while the Mystics (16-19) are still fighting for a playoff spot, just half a game back from the No. 8 seed. Washington has won the first two games of the series on May 18 and June 8, despite trading away All-Star Brittney Sykes at the deadline. So, who will come out on top this time? With so much at stake for both teams in very different ways, it’s definitely a matchup you won’t want to miss.
Here’s your complete guide to everything you need to know about the upcoming matchup.

Prediction: Can the Mystics Stay Hot in Their Next Game?
As the playoff race heats up, the Washington Mystics are heading into this matchup with a 16-19 record, sitting 10th in the WNBA standings but just three games behind the Fever, who are in sixth. That means if the Mystics can put together a solid string of wins, a playoff spot is still within reach.
Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun are already out of playoff contention with a 7-27 record, the worst in the league. But don’t count them out completely — they’ve been competitive in games and creating chaos on the court. Sonia Citron is coming off a hot streak, scoring at least 17 points in five of her last six games, while averaging 15.3 points per game for the season so far. Marina Mabrey, on the other hand, is averaging 12.5 points per game while being inconsistent in her last four games.
When it comes to overall team stats, the Mystics look much stronger, especially at home. They’ve won 10 games on their court, averaging 79.2 points per game (10th in the league) while giving up 81 points (6th). Washington outrebounds opponents by 2 per game, grabbing 33.7 boards while allowing 31.7. They shoot 5.8 threes per game, led by Citron’s 1.8, but opponents are slightly better from deep at 7.7 per game. Citron is also the team leader in steals (1.1), Shakira Austin leads in blocks (1.0), Kiki Iriafen grabs 8.6 boards per game, and Sug Sutton leads in assists with 3.6 per game.
Connecticut, meanwhile, is struggling across the board — scoring just 75.4 points per game (12th), shooting 40.9% from the field (12th), and making only 30.2% of threes (last in the league). They allow 86.3 points per game (10th), give up 46.3% from the field, and 34.3% from deep. Tina Charles leads the Sun with 16 points and 5.8 rebounds, while Bria Hartley leads in assists with 2.9 per game. Saniya Rivers and Olivia Nelson-Ododa lead in steals (1.6) and blocks (1.3) respectively.

Looking at trends and recent form, the Mystics are slight favorites. They’ve won three of their last five games, with two consecutive wins on the road, while the Sun have lost 15 of their last 20 and seven of their last ten. Washington is averaging 81.5 points per game this season, shooting 44.6% overall and 33.9% from deep, while defensively holding opponents to 83.4 points, 44% shooting, and just 31.8% from three.
Connecticut’s numbers just don’t match up, especially on the road where they’ve only won once in 16 tries and carry a WNBA-worst net rating of -24.2. With all this in mind, the Mystics seem poised to take a third straight win against a struggling Sun team, but given Connecticut’s occasional surprises, fans can still expect some drama on the court.
