Since the viral clip started making the rounds online, at least half a dozen prominent public figures, major sports analysts, and major corporate brands have referenced or shared the Sophie Cunningham pointing meme. McGregor is the latest in line, and quoted the meme after another MMA page, TrevCoMMA, turned the clip into a jibe directed toward popular American fighter Nate Diaz.

“Nate Diaz when he wobbles a guy in the 5th round that has been beating his ass all fight,” the account wrote as the caption of the clip.

Conor McGregor obviously found that quite hilarious, as he quoted the post on his X page with two laughing emojis. And it is quite understandable, as he has had quite a heated rivalry with the American fighter. The two have faced off twice, and one ended in a win for each side. Nate Diaz won the first one by rear-naked choke. The rematch ended in McGregor’s favor via majority decision.

The Sophie Cunningham meme originated during Monday’s Fever-Mercury game. Specifically, it happened during a fourth-quarter altercation between Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner.

Cunningham, in a bid to defend her teammate Clark, joined the scuffle. She was, however, met with a rather aggressive gesture and yelling from Bonner. She stood her ground, silently pointing her finger directly back at Bonner with a stone-cold expression. But the funny part was the fact that she did that for an unusually long amount of time.

Both Cunningham and Bonner were assessed technical fouls for the exchange. In fact, the entire scuffle led to five total technical fouls and one player’s ejection. Clark, Myisha Hines-Allen, and Alyssa Thomas also got technical fouls, and Hines-Allen was ejected from the game.

Since then, many fans, celebrities, and sports personalities have been making memes out of that gesture. They compare the pointing to their strict mothers, backseat drivers, and whatever else the internet could come up with. Adding to the joke, Cunningham also posted a TikTok before the Fever-Mercury rematch on Wednesday with the caption, “No pointing today.”

The memes show no signs of slowing down.

Celebrities and Popular Figures Who Have Used Sophie Cunningham’s Viral Pointing Meme

As mentioned earlier, many popular sports and non-sports figures have gotten in on the viral Sophie Cunningham meme joke, apart from Conor McGregor.

ESPN senior writer and NFL analyst Mina Kimes was one of those who got in on the joke. She used the meme to joke about how her 2-year-old child reacts to a distant garbage truck blocks away.

American sports reporter and anchor Alyssa Lang also joined in. She used the meme as a joke about her dog when she is opening a bag of cheese.

Others, like award-winning broadcast meteorologist Colin Myers, used it as a joke about his wife and the way he loads the dishwasher. A number of brands and corporations, like Domino’s UK, also used it as well.

Perhaps, it might really be the best meme from the WNBA this season. Or, in fact, one of the best out of the WNBA in recent years.
