“Love a trans foul,” is the cryptic message Sophie Cunningham’s former Indiana Fever teammate Sydney Colson wrote on Instagram Threads following DiJonai Carrington’s Flagrant 2 foul on the 30-year-old during a matchup against the Chicago Sky on August 8. Now, Colson is back at it again after doubling down on this topic, this time with intensity.

While Colson’s latest comments referring to Cunningham have attracted attention from online fans and analysts alike, former Philadelphia Eagles running back Markus Thomas believes Colson is only shooting herself in the foot.
“Sydney Colson is cutting off her own hand and the opportunity she’s going to get because the corporate sponsors and stuff like that, they’re not going to look too kindly on this. They’re going to have to make a decision because I would imagine there’s a lot of people that don’t side with her particular point of view,” Thomas said on his X handle.
On the latest episode of her podcast Unsupervised with Syd and TP, Sydney Colson indirectly took aim at Cunningham and other “white players” and questioned the responsibility they have to protect their teammates, particularly when dealing with discrimination.
“For the white players in the league, when you don’t say sh*t, and even worse, when you say things that are harmful, talking about the trans sh*t, nobody respects you. Shut the f*** up. Shut the f*** up. Nobody wants to hear your opinion. Freedom of speech, so you can say it, but just know people are trying to get by when they’re dealing with you,” Colson said.
The catalyst for Colson’s latest comments comes from Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes that she made back in July in an ESPN profile. Cunningham stated that she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room,” adding that they should not have to compete against “biological men.” She later reiterated that she chooses to stand by this opinion.
But as the former NFL player stated, not everyone would be on Sydney Colson’s side. There is proof in that when we look at what sports columnist Jason Whitlock had to say after hearing Colson.
“This is why everybody hates the WNBA because they know, lurking just beneath the surface, are the sick Colsons. This is what this league is about: demonizing traditional sports fans… her point of view is driven by her life experiences, which probably have nothing to do with the Indiana Fever or the WNBA,” Whitlock said on X.
Meanwhile, WNBA podcaster Adrienne Ross has pointed out what, in her opinion, is the ironic side of Sydney Colson’s recent comments about Cunningham.
“Whatever her issue is with Sophie Cunningham, it’s so odd, ironic, delusional that the things she seems to uphold as some kind of incredible virtue, those things. It’s like she’s talking about Sophie, but she doesn’t realize that Sophie is the one who is displaying that virtue that she and TP (Theresa Plaisance) think,” she said on the Adrienne Ross Show on YouTube.
While a WNBA player is yet to comment on Colson’s latest comments, if we travel back to August 8, Sky’s DiJonai Carrington also drew attention following her Flagrant 2 foul on Cunningham. Immediately after heading to the locker room, Carrington took to Instagram Threads and wrote “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever”.
That being said, Carrington later denied that the post was about the foul decision at all, but rather a broader systemic issue.
Regardless, Cunningham deemed the foul from Carrington “unnecessary”. She established all of this while making it clear that her race played no role in the officials’ decision.
While Carrington had a similar stance against Cunningham back in August, she has not followed up on that, so it is understandable she is not in the same spotlight as Colson currently.
As for Markus Thomas’ comments, they remain pure speculation for now, but it will be interesting to see whether Sydney Colson’s stance leads to something bigger, after multiple WNBA analysts and sports personalities went against the former Indiana Fever player’s words.
