While the prospect of a Fudd-Bueckers reunion excites national media, a growing chorus of dissent is emerging from an unexpected place: the Dallas Wings’ own fanbase. With Wings securing the first pick at the 2026 WNBA draft, this possibility has been fueled even more. Meanwhile, the Dallas Wings’ supporters aren’t very excited to see a nostalgic reunion between the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year and her real-life partner.

It started with ESPN’s WNBA mock draft, where Fudd was projected as the top pick and was drafted by the Dallas Wings, which isn’t much of a surprise given the National Player of the Year Award-winning season that Fudd is having with the UConn Huskies.

“Michael Voepel’s 2026 WNBA mock draft is here‼️ UConn’s Azzi Fudd could be reunited with Paige Bueckers in Dallas 👀.” ESPN’s X post’s caption read.

A possible reunion of Fudd and Bueckers with the Dallas Wings would open the door to an array of possibilities for the team. With her talent and prowess, Fudd can quite easily adapt to the pro game, and we can see a glimpse of Fudd and Bueckers’ domination at the College Park Center next season, quite similar to what the duo has been doing till last season at the Storrs.

Moreover, this season, Fudd has been averaging 17.5 points per game, the best of her collegiate career. Her playmaking capabilities have also improved, and she is currently averaging 3.1 assists. Her combination of scoring and rim protection makes her a prototypical top WNBA prospect.

And along with her former UConn partner, Bueckers, Fudd can add a lot of sharpness and precision on the court for the Dallas Wings. Yet despite that, the Wings fans are not buying into the nostalgia of an Azzi Fudd-Paige Bueckers reunion for very specific reasons.

Fans highlight reasons that go against a nostalgic-driven Azzi Fudd-Paige Bueckers reunion

“We don’t need another guard, lmao,” stated a fan.

“And it would make ZERO sense for them to do that…. Not if they legitimately are trying form a winning squad. Azzi might be the best player available, but the Wings need a post player badly,” chimed in another.

There’s no doubt that Azzi Fudd will enter the 2026 WNBA draft as one of the top prospects. With her numbers for the UConn Huskies validating this perfectly, the Wings have identified a complexity with Fudd’s draft that can’t be overlooked. The Wings are well-stocked with guards, including Paige Bueckers and Aziaha James.

Thus, another player of the same profile can mean that Dallas Wings coach Jose Fernandez will have limited options for all the other players on the court. Using the first pick on Fudd could also mean they miss out on drafting a rim protector or a defensively inclined player in the 2026 WNBA draft, which they need immediately before the season begins.

“If Arike is staying idk if Dallas needs Azzi … 😭 they need bigs. unless they can fit both Arike and Azzi in, idk.”

Azzi Fudd’s draft to the Dallas Wings is immensely dependent on Arike Ogunbowale’s decision to stay for the 2026 season or join another team. Ogunbowale was a starting guard along with Bueckers throughout the 2025 season. If Ogunbowale stays, it leads to the same problem again: too many guards. But, if she leaves, Fudd to the Wings might be a possibility.

Ogunbowale is currently a free agent, and at any other time, she could have engaged in talks with a different team or the Wings. But with the WNBA’s CBA negotiations standoff, free agency endeavors are also in uncertainty. But for now, we’ll have to play the waiting game.

“Terrible idea. They need a solid big. If they draft Fudd, they’ll be in the same position,” wrote a fan.

“For obvious reasons, this would be fun. However, the Wings need a Big,” stated another.

All in all, it would be up to the Dallas Wings’ front office to determine the type of players that head coach Fernandez. With the first pick already in their hands, it won’t be surprising if the Wings draft a player other than Azzi Fudd who suits their playing style and fulfills their requirement much more.

The probable date for the 2026 WNBA draft is April 13. However, with the ongoing standoff in WNBA CBA negotiations, the draft and the WNBA season are yet to be set in stone. With the league currently in a moratorium and neither party reaching an agreement, the draft and, eventually, the league are at a crossroads. For now, Fudd will continue to dominate the college basketball spectrum, with the National Championships approaching next month.

But you can always chip in with your opinions regarding Fudd’s future at the WNBA. Where do you want to see her in the WNBA next season? Let us know in the comments.
