“Everyone on that roster can contribute. That’s our competitive depth, and everyone is going to continue to buy into that,” were the words of coach Chris Koclanes following the win against the Phoenix Mercury on July 3. But fast forward a few days, and the Wings were hit with a reality check. In the rematch, Phoenix handed them a brutal 102-72 loss. And to make matters worse, Paige Bueckers was involved in an on-court collision that left fans holding their breath.
In the first quarter of the game, Paige was seen driving with the ball to the basket when she collided with Mercury center Kalani Brown, taking a hard hit to the head in the process. Surprisingly, no foul was called, no review, no timeout – just play on. The hit clearly took a toll, as Paige looked off for the rest of the game, went scoreless in the third quarter, and didn’t return at all in the fourth.
This comes after Bueckers had been named WNBA Rookie of the Month for June, first for a Dallas rookie since 2019. In seven games through June, she basically did not remember that she was a rookie, dropping 21.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5 assists, 1.7 steals, and nearly a block per game. And she did it while shooting 47.5% from the field and 92.9% from the line. She ranked third in scoring overall, led all guards, and was the only player in the league to average at least 20 points and 5 assists. Among rookies? She wasn’t just leading the pack, but she was the pack. First in points, first in assists, second in steals. Not bad for your first go at it.

But in this game? She could only score 11 points on 3-11 shooting from the field. And that’s not all. The rookie was limited to just 2 rebounds and 3 assists against the Mercury. So, of course, it makes one worried. But head coach Chris Koclanes was quick to calm the nerves in the post-game press conference. As per Joey Mistretta’s tweet on X, Koclanes reassured everyone, saying, “(Paige Bueckers) is feeling okay.”

What’s your perspective on:
Can the Wings bounce back from this crushing defeat, or is their depth just a myth?
Have an interesting take?
Fans were understandably on edge, especially since Paige had already dealt with a concussion earlier after Wings’ game against the Chicago Sky. While the exact cause wasn’t officially confirmed, most believe it came from a collision with Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot. That incident sidelined her for three (one more due to an illness) games under concussion protocol, and no one wants to see a sequel to that situation.
On top of that, the Dallas Wings are currently down to bare bones, with only eight healthy players available. Key names like Arike Ogunbowale, DiJonai Carrington, and Maddy Siegrist are all sidelined with injuries. If Bueckers is added to that growing list, it would be a major headache for coach Chris Koclanes.
But even with all those setbacks, did Paige stop making history? Absolutely not! Let’s dive into the latest record she’s added to her growing list of achievements!

Paige Bueckers joins the Caitlin Clark category!
Earlier today, reporter Scott Agnes revealed that the WNBA has officially moved the Dallas Wings vs. Indiana Fever game to the Mavericks’ arena. The reason? The overwhelming demand for the game. Of course, the hype is real, as fans will finally witness the much-anticipated showdown between the No. 1 picks. Also, fittingly enough, after tonight’s game, Paige has officially stamped her name in the “CC category” too!
Paige has now officially played 15 games in her W career. She is so far averaging 18.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. And according to Polymarket Hoops, Bueckers now joins Caitlin Clark as the only players in W history to average 15+ points and 5+ assists across their first 15 games. That’s nothing short of legendary!
Paige Bueckers has made it a routine to break records every time she steps on the court. And even though she still hasn’t played a single single-digit game in her WNBA career, tonight was one of those rare occasions where she couldn’t shine the brightest. Maybe that knock to the head had something to do with it? We will soon find out in the upcoming days! Till then, stay tuned for further updates!
