As the season heads into its final stretch of games, all eyes are on the battle for positions 6 to 8, with 4 teams — possibly 5 — eyeing the 3 spots that would book their ticket to the playoffs. But three teams are already out of the picture. And two of them will be playing each other soon. It’s Dallas Wings vs Connecticut Sun time.

The Wings and the Sun might not have much to play for this season, but pride will definitely be on the line. The Sun sit 11th with a 9-28 record, while the Wings are at the very bottom with a 9-29 record. To make matters worse for Dallas, they’ve lost 10 of their last 11 games heading into this matchup.

At first glance, this game might not look like much. But when pride is on the line, teams often bring out their best. Here’s everything you need to know before the Wings and Sun face off.

Prediction: Can the Wings snap out of their losing streak?

The Wings and Sun are meeting for the third time this season. The Wings took the last matchup 86-83 on June 20. The Sun, meanwhile, are coming off a heartbreaking 2-point loss to the New York Liberty, which snapped their three-game winning streak. Still, they’ve won three of their last five games, and there’s no reason they can’t be considered the favorites heading into this one.

The Wings, as mentioned above, have just one win in their last 11 games and are clearly counting down the days until this rough season ends. Injuries have taken a major toll, with five players listed, including key names like Arike Ogunbowale, Li Yueru, and Tyasha Harris.

It’s worth noting that Paige Bueckers missed the Wings’ last training session due to an illness, and her availability for the game will be decided closer to tip-off. Paige, who recently saw her double-digit scoring streak end against the Valkyries, has struggled over the last two games. But everyone knows her quality. If Dallas ends up missing both Arike Ogunbowale and Paige, they would end up missing  34.5 points from the two, and that’s a massive gap for a thin roster like the Wings to fill.

Despite everything, ESPN gives the Dallas Wings a 73.9% chance of winning. Why? There are a few reasons. First, the Sun have struggled on the road, going just 3-16 this season. Another factor is the numbers. The Sun average 75.8 points per game, while the Wings put up 81.5. Defensively, there’s not much separating the two either: the Wings allow 87.4 points per game, while the Sun give up 85.2.

But that prediction leans heavily on Paige Bueckers actually playing. Paige has had a stellar rookie season, recently tying Candace Parker’s WNBA rookie record for most points in a game. She’s averaging 19 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while leading the Wings in points, assists, and steals.

If Paige plays, the Wings might just pull off a surprise. But if she doesn’t, ESPN’s prediction is probably spot on. Who are you backing for the upcoming game? Drop your picks in the comments below!
