The pressure to perform is ever-present for all the stakeholders involved with the South Carolina team, especially the young players. However, head coach Dawn Staley and the team management have taken an empathetic approach to this delicate issue, prioritizing player health and well-being.

“If we see anyone in our program going through something, we give them the space and the grace to work through it,” Staley said in a statement through Gamecocks WBB. “When they embrace that it may take more than that, we embrace that too.

“Maddy’s decision is a difficult one for a young person to make, and I’m glad she felt our program was a safe place for her to make it.”

It seems that this decision was weighing on McDaniel for a while, as she laid bare her emotions in a social media post.

“Every athlete knows that mental strength is as valuable as their physical strength. It just doesn’t announce itself in the same way when it needs attention. Still, it’s time for me to acknowledge it,” McDaniel said via an Instagram post. “I’ve tried to just keep going, but right now I’m not giving my coaches, my teammates, and the FAMS the best version of myself that they deserve.

“So I’ve decided to step away from the team to focus on my mental and emotional well-being, to get back to my best self on all levels. It is the strongest thing I can think of to do because of what being part of Gamecock women’s basketball means to me.”

This sudden omission will surely affect the Gamecocks’ plans for the season. They were elevating McDaniel to a more central role, especially after players like Raven Johnson and Ta’Niya Latson graduated.

McDaniels had established herself as a key rotational piece for this team, averaging 4.3 points while shooting 35.3% from the field and 2.7 assists last season in 19.7 minutes per game. She played 33 games last season.

There has been no mention of the timeline for her return, either from coach Staley and the team management or McDaniel herself.

Unfortunately, the Gamecocks are no strangers to players taking breaks like these, as it comes with the territory. Forward Ashlyn Watkins also decided to take a leave of absence to focus on ‘herself’, as she sat out the entire 2025-26 season.

Still, this presents an immediate challenge for the Gamecocks, as they lack squad depth when it comes to their backcourt, as they have very few players out of the twenty available that can be classified as a guard, with McDaniel being the only ‘true’ point guard.

The fans will surely hope that McDaniel does get the support she needs at this crucial time.
