After the Atlanta Dream snapped their two-game winning streak, the Chicago Sky looked like they may finally get their 10th win of the season against the New York Liberty. With less than a minute on the clock, the Sky were 8 points ahead of the Liberty when Sabrina Ionescu decided to spoil their party. Ionescu scored 9 points in 38 seconds, erasing the Chicago lead. Following the stunning loss, Sky coach Tyler Marsh was at a loss as his team picked up their 18th loss.

“Moves are made. You bet on our team. Obviously, we didn’t foresee the 9-18 record now, but there’s pressure for any of the 15 coaches in this league. There’s pressure to win at all parts when you’re sitting in this position and when you know that you’re capable of pulling some of these out.” Marsh said during his post-game conference.

“And so it’s a credit to our team for continuing the fight. I thought they played incredibly hard. They earned a win tonight. I thought we outplayed New York for the majority of the game today. Sabrina made some late-game heroics like she’s done in the past,” he added.

Over the past two seasons, the Sky have made several questionable roster decisions. They gave up future draft capital to acquire Atkins, only to move on from the two-time All-Star after just one season. They even traded their franchise star, Angel Reese. And those are the exact decisions that have left Chicago searching for answers.

Throughout the ongoing season, they have let several games slip away despite putting themselves in a position to win. And to put that into perspective, their latest game might just be the best example.

Against the Liberty on Wednesday, it looked like the Sky had done enough to pull off one of their biggest wins of the year. They held an eight-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the game before Sabrina Ionescu completely flipped the game on its head.

“I just saw the basket,” Sabrina Ionescu said after the game. “I felt like I was kind of having my 3-point shootout in-game.”

In the blink of an eye, this game turned into what could have been for the Sky. And that’s been their story this season. According to Bleacher Report, 11 of their 18 losses have been by single digits. The Sky’s average losing margin is just 9.7 points.

If Chicago continues on its current trajectory, it could finish with one of the league’s worst records and land the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft. But because of the deal they made with Washington, that opportunity may not even belong to them.

Whether the team can turn things around after the All-Star break remains to be seen. However, for Tyler Marsh, the focus remains on winning games rather than worrying about what next year’s draft might look like.
