The Indiana Fever may be building around Caitlin Clark, but if you ask head coach Stephanie White, there’s one player on the roster who doesn’t need a system; she just needs the ball. And you’ve probably guessed it right? It’s Kelsey Mitchell.

In an offseason where nearly 80% of the league hit free agency, the Indiana Fever had five players from their roster entering the market as well. And while they’ve already managed to bring back most of their core, Mitchell was their “priority.”

“Kelsey was our No. 1 priority in free agency,” coach White revealed recently. “You know, making sure that we’re resigning her, making sure that she understands how important she is to everything that we are going to do. She is probably the one person on our roster that can just get a bucket (and) doesn’t need any help.”

That statement says everything you need to know about how this franchise sees Kelsey Mitchell.

And they backed it up.

After months of uncertainty surrounding free agency and how the league may look after the CBA, Indiana made sure Mitchell wasn’t going anywhere by locking her in on a one-year supermax deal. And that deal made her the first $1M+ player in franchise history.

But it’s not like she became the Fever’s most wanted player overnight.

After her stunning performance in the 2025 WNBA season, where she averaged 20.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, and led the Fever to the semifinals even when the franchise’s roster was injury-ridden.

So just after the Fever’s playoff run ended, both the front office and coaching staff made their stance clear on her.

“The priority will be Kelsey Mitchell, and making sure she remains in a Fever jersey,” General Manager Amber Cox said at the time.

Even coach White echoed that same sentiment and said, “She was the number one priority… and she’s the number one priority this year. She has been so important.”

So when free agency finally arrived, this move was nothing but a formality.

With their core locked in and their star guard back in the fold, let’s take a look at how this team will look in the upcoming season.

Indiana Fever Turn Up the Heat with Kelsey Mitchell

Even though Caitlin Clark was out most of the season last year, the Fever still managed to go the farthest they have in the WNBA playoffs since 2015. If she can be fully healthy this time, this team becomes majorly dangerous.

Clark will continue to stretch defenses with her deep shooting range and elite playmaking, but the difference this time is structural. With more ball-handling and defensive help around her, Indiana won’t need her to carry every possession. So she can shift into more off-ball creation while still controlling the offense when it will matter the most.

Then there’s Aliyah Boston, who will hold down the interior as the defensive anchor and most efficient scoring option in the paint. Her pick-and-roll chemistry with Clark remains the foundation of Indiana’s half-court offense.

We have already talked about the importance of Kelsey Mitchell on this team. She gives the Fever something every contender needs: a scorer who doesn’t need structure to get hot. This also makes her one of the most attractive players in the league. So if opponents focus on stopping Clark or Boston, Mitchell will make them pay instantly.

But for the Fever front office, who are leaving no stones unturned this season as they plan to secure a championship no matter the cost, this is still not enough.

So they went to the WNBA Draft and secured Raven Johnson.

The South Carolina Gamecocks star will give Indiana the ability to pressure the ball at a higher level while easing the load on Clark. And let’s not forget her chemistry with Boston, as they used to play together in college.

Now, in the frontcourt, Monique Billings is another key player who will bring the physicality and rebounding presence Indiana leaned on in its late-season surge last year, while Damiris Dantas and Myisha Hines-Allen provide depth and flexibility behind Boston.

Then there are Lexie Hull, Sophie Cunningham, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, and many more.

So if the pieces click the way they’re supposed to, the Fever aren’t just chasing contention in 2026; they might already be standing in it.
