Following Indiana Fever’s 102-85 blowout loss against the Las Vegas Aces in the series opener, many thought the Fever might not be able to fix their defensive lapses in time after all. Broadcaster Robin Lundberg even said part of him felt like he was heading toward the ‘team’s funeral.’ However, after Caitlin Clark’s historic performance fueled the turnaround in Game 2, ESPN host Chiney Ogwumike noted the quality that makes CC standout.

While discussing the Fever’s 99-89 home win against the Aces on ESPN’s NBA Today, Malika Andrews revealed that Clark became the first player in the WNBA to score 27 points and 15 assists in the same game. That’s when Ogwumike explained why it’s performances like these that make the Fever star truly special.
“That was an epic performance by Caitlin Clark. 27 and 15 [with their] back against the wall. Team up against elimination at home. All pressure in the world, and she delivered. And what I love is that she led by example.”
For Ogwumike, it’s the 24-year-old’s resilience to overcome setbacks, willingness to fix mistakes, and immediately produce results that make her a star.
After the loss, Clark didn’t beat around the bush during the Game 1 postgame conference when asked about her and Fever’s performance. The Guard rated the performance “an F,” and said that more than the Las Vegas Aces, it was their mistakes that made things more difficult.
“I thought our actions were sloppy. I thought what we were running wasn’t great and nobody got an easier open look.”
Caitlin Clark took her own criticism and made sure not to repeat those mistakes in Game 2. She didn’t just play the playmaking role with 15 assists; Clark shot 5-of-11 of her three-pointers and went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Most importantly, the guard helped Indiana Fever defend against the Aces. Despite conceding 5 turnovers, Clark got 7 rebounds, and Chiney Ogwumike noticed the two-way impact the 2026 MVP candidate had on the game.
“She said, ‘I’m going to compete on both ends of the floor,'” the ESPN host added. She is like a post player’s dream, a teammate’s dream, because she will lead you to the promised land. She will lead you to where you need to go.”
And this isn’t the first time Clark has come back strong after a loss. After a disappointing 93-77 regular-season loss against the Washington Mystics on September 20, Clark powered the Fever to win against the Minnesota Lynx in the following game.
In that game, the Fever star also scored 27 points and seven rebounds, but had fewer assists with 9.
Meanwhile, in their second clash of the series against the Aces, it wasn’t just Caitlin Clark who showed for the Fever. While Aliyah Boston had scored 18 points in the first game, she hadn’t been able to contain Wilson.
In the second game, Boston didn’t just guard Wilson; she scored 22 points with five assists and four rebounds while going 10-for-15 from the field. Kelsey Mitchell also contributed significantly with 26 points, while going ging 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Yet, it was once again Clark who enabled Mitchell and Boston’s scoring.
Stephanie White’s adjustments also worked in Indiana’s favor. White had drawn significant criticism from media personalities for her statement after the playoff loss.
“It’s experience. Certainly, there’s no substitute for experience. Some of them got it a year ago. But oftentimes, you have to be humbled first.”
Following the statement, former college basketball player Rachel DeMita expressed her disappointment on social media while sharing the clip of the press conference.
“Have to be humbled???? in a 3-game series where your best chance of winning was to steal game 1????? I’m speechless.”
However, it turned out the getting humbled really did work out for Indiana at least in Game 2. Whether the Las Vegas Aces will make their own adjustments to meet a determined Caitlin Clark and company in Game 3 remains to be seen. It’ll also be interesting to see whether Clark can replicate the impact she had at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Vegas’s backyard.
