Caitlin Clark appeared to have a lot to say during the Indiana Fever’s Game 1 defeat to the Las Vegas Aces. One particular exchange of hers with the Aces’ bench caught attention online, but for one eyewitness, the moment that stood out was A’ja Wilson’s immediate response.

With about 34 seconds left in the third quarter, Clark was called for a foul against Vegas forward Stephanie Talbot, who proceeded to push the Aces’ lead to 86-62 with her free throw. It was during this brief break that Sporting Tribune reporter Arion Armeniakos witnessed a tense exchange between Clark and the Aces’ bench and wrote about it on X.
“Caitlin Clark just said something to the Aces bench after being called for a foul, going for a steal,” he wrote. “A’ja Wilson was the first to get up and react, followed by the rest of the bench. Chippy.”
The exchange was just one small part of a frustrating night for Clark. The star guard scored 15 points and logged 10 assists, logging her first playoff double-double, but shot just 6-17 from the field. Clark also turned the ball over six times. After the game, she called out the team for their poor play, even grading them “an F” on the defensive end.
“I thought our actions were sloppy,” Clark said. “I thought what we were running wasn’t great and nobody got an easier open look.”
Meanwhile, the Aces were firing on all cylinders. The team shot 59% from the field and 47% from three-point range, while holding the Fever to 45% from the field.
A’ja Wilson was the engine behind their success, as the four-time MVP ended the game with 38 points, a playoff career high, on 15-for-19 shooting from the field, while grabbing 16 rebounds and logging two steals and four blocks. She previously scored 38 points against the Seattle Storm in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. She was not alone on the offense, as Jackie Young added 21 points and 10 assists for a double-double, while Chelsea Gray contributed another 14 points to go with her eight assists.
The interaction with Clark wasn’t the only tense moment during the game. Later, in the fourth quarter, Fever center Aliyah Boston was called for a foul on Wilson despite making minimal contact, something she was not pleased about. As Boston headed to the bench after fouling out, she made a flopping gesture by waving her hands, indicating that she thought Wilson was getting a favorable whistle.
Regardless, it’s clear that in Game 1, the Aces have figured out how to deal with the Fever after losing 2-1 in the regular season head-to-head record. Now, as the two sides head to Indiana for Game 2 on September 29, only time will tell if Clark and her team can bounce back as they hope to even the series for a chance to upset the #3-seeded Aces.
