Unrivaled has always had a way of drawing raw emotion out of its players. Maybe it’s the format. Fewer players on the court means more space, more pressure, and nowhere to hide. The intensity rises. So does the drama. We saw it firsthand during the one-on-one tournament, when Paige Bueckers walked off after her loss to Chelsea Gray. But that wasn’t the end of it. When 5-on-5 play resumed, the spotlight shifted to her teammate, Kate Martin.

Following the massive success of the one-on-one tournament, regular action resumed with Breeze BC facing Lunar Owls BC. But in the dying seconds of the third quarter, a moment unfolded that no one expected– one that has since become the talk of social media.

With about 23 seconds left in the third quarter, Skylar Diggins drove in and finished a layup over Kate Martin to push the Lunar Owls ahead 62–54. But the play didn’t end there. As the commentator put it, Diggins was seen “talking her smack” after the bucket, and Martin didn’t let it slide, firing back with a taunt of her own.
As you would expect, the officials stepped in. Both players were hit with technical fouls for the exchange, and within moments, social media was buzzing with reactions. Here’s what fans had to say.
Kate Martin’s Taunt Backfires
“Skylar Diggins is like my 3 year old niece they throw temper tantrums then sit down like nothing ever happened 😭😭,” one fan said, while another joined in to add, “Skylar has anger issues… 😂” Naturally, for many watching, the first question that came to their mind was: Why did Diggins shout at Martin in the first place after scoring?
Well, we all know just how ultra-competitive Skylar Diggins really is. It’s part of what makes her great…but occasionally, it causes trouble as well. Take July 2025, for example. During a Connecticut Sun vs. Seattle Storm game, Diggins and Bria Hartley were involved in a tense altercation after Hartley committed an intentional foul, with Seattle holding an 11-point lead and less than three minutes remaining.
In that same game, Diggins was also seen urging her teammates to tighten up defensively and close their gaps. That pretty much tells you everything about her competitive spirit. Another fan chimed in to say, “Unhinged emotions after a simple layup… Peak women’s basketball!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣”
To be fair, that wasn’t just any basket. The shot over Kate Martin carried real significance. It moved the Owls closer to securing their third win of the season. By the final buzzer, they had sealed a 75–70 victory and kept their playoff hopes alive.
Now you might be wondering how the Lunar Owls are still in the playoff hunt with only three games left. The answer lies in the format. Unrivaled’s postseason includes six of the league’s eight teams.
Seeds three through six will battle it out in the opening round at the league’s home base in Medley, Florida, on Feb. 28. From there, the remaining four teams head to Brooklyn for the next round before the season concludes with the championship game at Sephora Arena on March 4.
So even though the Lunar Owls sit dead last right now, they’re still very much in the playoff race, which is exactly why this game meant so much. That said, some viewers were puzzled by the officiating, especially when it came to Kate Martin’s technical. “Why did Kate get a tech? Women’s basketball officials might be worse than local flag football officials,” one fan said.

That’s a fair point, considering Martin didn’t appear to do much to provoke Diggins’ reaction in the first place. Now we get it. Emotions took over, and that’s what led to the trash talk. But the officials’ decision also makes a lot of sense. Martin was seen retaliating, and while we couldn’t hear her exact words, it’s safe to assume they weren’t exactly friendly, which likely explains why she was given a technical as well.
Another fan joined in to say, “Omg Seriously let it go.” And maybe that’s exactly what everyone should do, because the tournament is heading into its crunch time, and moments like this are only going to become more common. The stakes are rising, and the drama isn’t going anywhere. Stay tuned, because Unrivaled action is just getting started.
