The Indiana Fever’s hopes for a deep playoff run took a big hit when Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson were ruled out for the season with foot and knee injuries. That didn’t stop them from pulling off a win against a struggling Chicago Sky team missing Angel Reese, but everyone knew the Fever needed reinforcements. Enter Odyssey Sims. While the whole WNBA community waits to see if she can help share the backcourt load with Kelsey Mitchell and Sophie Cunningham as the team patiently awaits CC’s return, one fan took to X to reveal how they literally manifested this move by sharing a conversation from a year ago.

An X user named Ken Swift (@kenswift) shared a conversation they had with Sims over Instagram last August, after she was waived by the Wings. The Indiana Fever fan said, “Yet another Fever fan who thinks you’re amazing and it’s a crime you were cut. I pray the Fever step up because we would love to have you. You are class on and off the court. Stay strong. You’re amazing” To which they got a reply from the 2019 WNBA All-Star saying, “Thank you so much!!!!” Now, here she is, in Indianapolis, and deservedly so.

The guard showed flashes of her talent earlier this season, averaging 9.8 points and 3.5 assists per game in 12 outings. And though Sims has been something of a well-traveled veteran in her 11-year WNBA career—playing for six different teams—she’s pumped to have a fresh start with her seventh team Fever, after being waived by the Sparks.

After her first practice, the 33-year-old shared her thoughts: “They’re trying not to overload me with too many plays. I’ve just learned today just the basic ones that they’ve been running, and we have just played where they put all their plays. So I’ll be reviewing a lot today. But it’s no pressure…. I might call a play, it might be the wrong cuz I’m thinking of a different play. It’s happened to me before. So, I’m just going in with no pressure. Like I said, just going to play help them from the point guard position and just be me out there.”

Odyssey Sims will mainly be tasked with replicating the numbers Aari McDonald brought to the team before her season ended after the game against the Phoenix Mercury. McDonald stepped in for the Fever through a hardship exception after injuries sidelined Clark and Sophie Cunningham. She quickly made an impact, averaging 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals per game, while shooting  42.8% from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc in her first three games before getting waived.

After DeWanna Bonner left the team, McDonald was brought back and signed for the rest of the season. And honestly, the Fever front office couldn’t be happier with that call. In her last five games alone, she got 70 points, 15 rebounds, and 28 assists, proving just how crucial she is to the team.

Sure, a fan might have manifested this move into reality, but can Sims actually deliver? Will we ever see her drop a 27-point game like McDonald did against the Mercury? She definitely has the talent, but the real question is – can she gel with her Fever teammates fast enough to make that kind of impact? Only time will tell! That said, Sims had a message for the two injured guards in her first interview. Let’s see what she had to say!

What’s your perspective on:

Can Odyssey Sims replicate Aari McDonald's magic, or is the Fever's playoff dream slipping away?

“The biggest thing is just doing what I do best,” Sims said. “I know they’ve been down with the injuries. Prayers up for Syd and Aari, love them both.” According to Chloe Peterson, Aari was at the training session, riding around on a scooter, while Sydney Colson was there too, using crutches. That’s how strong the camaraderie is among the Fever teammates–and that’s what makes this team so special.

Let’s wait and see what kind of impact Sims will have on this Fever side. The upcoming game against the Wings will be a real test and give us a clearer picture of whether the Fever can still make a strong playoff run this season. What do you think about the Fever signing Odyssey Sims? What do you think will be the starting lineup now?
