The backlash against Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White reached a boiling point this season, and she gave an emotionally charged address to the media recently about the same. As the calls for increasing calls for the Fever to fire her increase for defending DiJonai Carrington‘s hard foul on Sophie Cunningham, the team’s front office has made its stance clear.

In a statement released to social media via ESPN’s Alexa Philippou on August 11, Fever President Kelly Krauskopf publicly backed her head coach, highlighting that she has kept the team together and united in trying times this season.
“Coach White has done a tremendous job leading the Fever and for the second-consecutive season, has us in great position for a playoff push,” the statement read. “She has kept our team focused and united, all while under the brightest spotlight our team and our league have ever experienced. She has the full support of leadership.”
Her comments come after a series of events that have increased the intensity of criticism that White has faced over the last two weeks. During the Fever’s game against the Chicago Sky on August 8, Sophie Cunningham was the target of a hard foul from the Sky’s Carrington, leading to the latter’s ejection. Upon being asked about the situation after the game, however, Stephanie White was defensive of Carrington.
“One of the things about Nai is that she’s gonna play her b*** off, man. She’s gonna compete,” she had told reporters. “Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup. And so I don’t oppose the hard foul. But I also don’t think that she intentionally went for the neck.”
Many speculated that Stephanie White’s defense of Carrington was because she had coached the guard during her time as head coach of the Connecticut Sun in 2023 and 2024, Carrington’s breakout season. Carrington had earned the Most Improved Player award and All-Defensive First Team honors in 2024.
This has led many, including Indiana’s lieutenant governor Micah Beckwith, to call for the Fever to fire Stephanie White. Beckwith called White’s defense of Carrington a sign of “terrible coaching.” Following this, she spoke about how the team has handled the noise well this season.
“I think our group does a really good job of pouring into one another, of keeping the main thing the main thing, of understanding that there are a lot of folks out there who want to divide us, that there are a lot of folks out there who want to create more challenges for us,” she told reporters per a clip shared by WISH-TV News on X. “We do a really good job of keeping that outside the locker room and pulling for one another. I mean, you guys see it. The vibes are always pretty good in here. I’m proud of them for that.”
For Stephanie White, the controversy might become a defining moment of her time in Indiana if she can’t deliver on the court, but so far, the Fever are not wavering on their head coach.
