The WNBA offseason is moving forward without clarity, and that uncertainty is forcing players to find structure wherever they can. With collective bargaining talks stalled and team communication restricted, development has become a personal responsibility rather than an organizational one.

That reality is why Unrivaled Basketball has quietly become more than just offseason entertainment. Against that backdrop, Indiana Fever forward Makayla Timpson offered a revealing look at how the 3×3 league is filling a developmental gap that the WNBA currently cannot.
Speaking on the Aari & Rachel Unfiltered podcast, Timpson described how Unrivaled’s developmental squad mirrors professional preparation far more closely than most fans realize. “We scrimmage twice a week, get live reps, and run plays just like a team would,” Timpson said. “We’re basically staying ready in case we get called up.” Those reps matter.

Unrivaled’s 3×3 format limits the floor to six total players, which spreads the court and increases individual responsibility. As a result, players are forced to defend in space, create off the dribble, and read tempo without hiding behind help defense. For a second-year forward coming off a limited rookie role, that environment creates something rare during a frozen offseason. Rhythm.
Timpson averaged just over seven minutes per game during her rookie WNBA season. However, the structure of Unrivaled allows her to maintain timing, conditioning, and decision-making in a way that traditional workouts cannot replicate. At the same time, the stalled CBA talks have removed normal guardrails. Teams and players are restricted from meaningful engagement, which makes live competition one of the few remaining ways to stay sharp.
That is where Unrivaled becomes an edge rather than an exhibition.

Normally, the offseason includes gradual ramp-ups through team programs, informal workouts, and direct communication. That pipeline has been disrupted. Because of that, Unrivaled has taken on a new function.

The league’s spacing forces players to evaluate their weaknesses in real time. On-ball defense, off-ball movement, and isolation decision-making are all exposed quickly. For developmental players, those repetitions offer clarity rather than comfort.
Timpson noted that the open floor helps players understand pace and positioning more clearly. That self-evaluation becomes especially important when feedback from team staff is unavailable. As a result, Unrivaled is not replacing WNBA development. It is preserving it.

Indiana Fever roster decisions quietly loom in the background
While Timpson focuses on growth, the Indiana Fever face decisions of their own. With expansion processes approaching, the Fever will need to finalize a protected list built around foundational pieces. Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston remain automatic locks. Beyond that, the conversation becomes more complex.
That complexity is where Unrivaled evaluations quietly matter. Lexie Hull has struggled offensively in Unrivaled, shooting 13-of-40 overall. However, her defensive consistency and ability to handle isolation assignments continue to stand out. Because of that, her value remains intact despite shooting variance.

Kelsey Mitchell remains another clear priority. Her experience, scoring reliability, and role stability keep her firmly in the Fever’s long-term picture. That leaves developmental players like Makayla Timpson operating in a narrow window. Every live rep matters, especially when front offices are searching for signals rather than guarantees.

Unrivaled does not decide roster spots on its own. Still, it provides context when other information is limited. Timpson’s comments reveal something larger than individual growth. Unrivaled is functioning as a pressure-tested holding pattern during a stalled labor landscape. It allows players to compete, adjust, and self-correct when traditional systems are paused.
For the Fever, that creates optionality. For Timpson, it creates leverage through readiness rather than projection. If CBA negotiations continue to linger, leagues like Unrivaled will only grow in importance. Not as alternatives to the WNBA, but as stabilizers within it. And for players trying to carve out long-term roles, staying sharp may be the difference between being protected and being exposed.
