14th WNBA Team: Everything You Need to Know About Toronto’s Latest Franchise

With women’s basketball getting revolutionized, the WNBA is using this as a perfect time to expand its operations. The NCAA is a teaser for the future of the WNBA and we are all aware of the unmatched talent in women’s college basketball. Well, the league wants to create more space to fit these talented youngsters and we might soon witness 14 teams in the WNBA. It has been just 6 months since the 13th WNBA team was announced. In no matter of time, we are back with another one. Looks like we will soon hear the ‘We the North’ chants in women’s basketball too! 

Larry Tanenbaum, a famous billionaire and also a Toronto native, is soon expected to add another team to his portfolio. According to CBC, his holding company, the Kilmer group, is expected to meet the people of WNBA to offer his bid and we will soon be getting an official announcement, possibly by May. The $2 billion business mogul owns all of Toronto’s sports units. NBA’s Toronto Raptors, NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, MLS’ Toronto FC, and soon another one in the WNBA. Why does Toronto have a great chance to become the 14th team?

The fanbase in Toronto is quite welcoming when it comes to sports. As per reports, it was one of the 10 cities that were shortlisted by WNBA’s commissioner Catherine Engelbert for expansion. Scotiabank Arena, Toronto’s homecourt, hosted a pre-season game for the WNBA and the tickets had fully sold out. This promising response helped Englebert to shortlist Toronto and now Tanenbaum will look forward to making this dream come true.

Moreover, Engelbert also revealed that she desires to see 14 teams in the league within 2025. The 13th team was officially added in October 2023, and hopefully, we see another one by May 2024.

Catherine Engelbert has been cautious when it comes to choosing new cities for the WNBA. Places which has the best fans, huge crowds, and basketball lovers. Well, how can we forget San Francisco then? Last year, the WNBA awarded an expansion franchise to the Golden State. The team will officially enter the competition from 2025 and Bay Area’s Chase Center will soon be witnessing two teams in the same arena.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob was interested in making a mark in the WNBA only because of coach Tara VanDerveer. He said, “I wouldn’t care as much about women’s basketball if it weren’t for her [VanDerveer]… She’s the goddess of women’s basketball”.
