It has been two days since DiJonai Carrington committed a potentially dangerous foul against Sophie Cunningham and then went on to make a controversial post on her socials after she was ejected from the game. While the Chicago Sky guard is yet to clarify the meaning behind her post, the controversial weekend has followed her into Monday night’s game against the Seattle Storm.

With over five minutes left on the clock in the first quarter of the game, Carrington checked in, and as she made her way to the court, the cameras caught the fans in the stadium celebrating the guard’s entry, with audibly loud cheers. So after everything that has unfolded, this reception has left Fox News reporter Jon Root questioning the fans’ reaction.

“Chicago Sky G DiJonai Carrington received a loud applause as she checked into the game vs Seattle tonight… Sickening,” Root wrote.

While Root seems to believe the guard doesn’t deserve such support, DiJonai Carrington has constantly clapped back at the backlash she has faced over her actions and the post, but since the incident, she hasn’t clarified the context behind her controversial message. While that remains a mystery, Carrington did speak out about the foul itself before her game against the Storm, according to Chicago State of Mind Sports on X.

“I’m never gonna let a open layup just be had. You can pull clips from however many seasons of me making that same exact play. It was unfortunate that I made contact with her in the way that I did, but it was never intentional.”

But even though Carrington maintains that she was simply trying to stop an open layup and never intended to hurt Sophie Cunningham, her comments have done little to settle the larger controversy surrounding her post. So with the Sky guard still allowed to take the court on Monday night, another Fox News reporter, Dan Zaslavsky, didn’t shy away from questioning the WNBA about why they haven’t taken any action against her.

“Two days after DiJonai Carrington was ejected for blasting Sophie Cunningham in the face and then posting…on social media, she checks into the Sky’s next game. No discipline from the WNBA. No public explanation. Nothing but silence.”

The league, however, is not completely ignoring the situation. As per reports, the WNBA is currently reviewing whether DiJonai Carrington’s actions during the game and her subsequent social media conduct warrant additional discipline, according to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Young. But since no decision has been announced yet, Carrington remained available for Chicago’s matchup with Seattle.

Now, for what it’s worth, Sophie Cunningham has her own theory about why her opponent may have made the post, which she spoke on after the August 8 game.

“I wasn’t even upset. I mean, I popped up. I’m not going to let anyone just do that to me. I think everyone knows that. I think that’s why she did it because she wants attention. Like, people have started craving attention. Like, go get it somewhere else. Go do something good in the world, I don’t know.”

For now, Carrington remains on the court while the WNBA determines whether further consequences are necessary. But with the league still reviewing the situation and Carrington yet to explain the meaning behind her controversial post, Monday night’s reception has only added another layer to an already heated controversy.
