Sabrina Ionescu looks up to Stephen Curry and calls him her favorite

The New York Liberty point guard is undeniably an ecstatic player on the hardwood. In fact, an interview video shared by the NBA on their official Instagram page suggests the contrary. When soccer icon David Beckham asked Sabrina about who her idol was when growing up, she quickly replied, “Stephen Curry.”

She continued saying, “I’m from the Bay Area. I remember going to games at just 8 to 10 years old. He was just drafted by the Warriors. Now, being able to be mentored by him and watch how his career has taken off and what he has meant for the sport is pretty cool. To know that I was the young kid who looked up to him.” Beckham then asked Ionescu how she felt being mentored by Curry. To this, she simply replied, “He was my favorite. Being able to see the athlete he is, the person he is, it’s cool. He is obviously a great person to look up to.”

However, Stephen Curry is not the only basketball player who has impacted Sabrina. The LA Lakers‘ legend Kobe Bryant has also left an imprint on the young Ionescu.

Sabrina Ionescu first met Kobe and his daughter Gianna Bryant back in Oregon when playing against USC. Kobe trained her past that point. Sabrina also mentions various pieces of advice that Kobe would give her. For instance, “Real sharpness comes without effort.”
