It was the beginning of the end. Back in January, when Kelsey Plum stepped onto the court during the Unrivaled season wearing Adidas sneakers instead of her usual Under Armour ones, UA quickly downplayed the situation, insisting it was just a performance-related issue.

“We were recently made aware of an issue impacting Kelsey’s training and performance,” an Under Armour spokesperson said at that time. “We are working closely with her and her team on a solution to support her needs.” Fast forward to today, and the “solution” they found wasn’t what anyone had in mind.

Under Armour and Plum have officially parted ways after a four-year partnership.

Sure, the signs were there when she started wearing different shoes, but it still comes as a surprise.

“We appreciate the partnership we’ve had with Kelsey and everything she’s contributed,” the company said in a statement. “As we sharpen our focus and build for what’s next, we’re moving in different directions. We wish her the best.”

While Kelsey Plum was in the final year of her four-year deal after signing with UA in 2022, there is no doubt that she has been one of Under Armour’s most recognizable athletes. Since signing a deal, Plum has featured prominently in the brand’s campaigns and became one of the key faces of its women’s basketball division.

However, even though she kicked off April with a bang by signing a one-year $999,999 deal to lead the Los Angeles Sparks into a new era, the timing of this split adds another layer to the story.

But Plum’s exit isn’t happening in isolation. It’s part of a bigger shift inside Under Armour.

Just months earlier, the brand had also parted ways with Stephen Curry, ending a 12- year relationship that once defined its basketball identity. So with two of the sport’s biggest stars now charting their own paths, it’s no surprise that the fans have been talking.

“Lost Curry and Plum”: Fans Question Under Armour’s Direction After Exit

As soon as this news went viral, the reactions from the fans were immediate and brutally honest.

One fan wrote, “Under Armour’s basketball division is basically a graveyard for relevance outside of Steph Curry. Plum finally realized that wearing UA kicks in 2026 is a crime against fashion. Jumping to Adidas is the first good footwear decision she’s made in four years.” While another fan added, “Nike about to swoop in like a villain.”

These comments don’t just reflect fan humor; they point toward a real question: what’s next for Plum?

And while there’s no official confirmation yet, the signs are pointing in a couple of clear directions. The Sparks star wore Nike during her college career with the Washington Huskies and initially signed with the brand when she entered the WNBA. So a return to Nike would make sense.

But at the same time, her recent appearances in Adidas during Unrivaled suggest that a move there could already be in motion. While nothing has been finalized publicly, both Nike and Adidas appear to be the most likely landing spots. Still, she needs to find a place soon.

With the 2026 WNBA season set to tip off on May 8, Plum will likely want to secure a new deal sooner rather than later. Entering the season without a shoe sponsor, especially as one of the league’s biggest stars, is far from ideal.

Another fan further added, “Damn lost Curry and Plum within 6 months…..Huge fumble.” While one wrote, “Under Armour has never had ANY vision when it comes to basketball. They fumbled doing something or really anything special with a generational basketball player like Steph.”

Those reactions may sound harsh, but they point to a deeper shift, one that started well before Kelsey Plum walked away.

When Stephen Curry, the face of Under Armour’s basketball division for over a decade, parted ways with the brand, it marked the end of an era. Curry wasn’t just another athlete on the roster; he was the identity of this brand. From signature sneakers to the launch of Curry Brand, his influence helped elevate the company into a legitimate competitor in the global basketball market.

But as both sides moved in different directions, with Curry choosing to take his brand independent and Under Armour focusing on a broader reset, it left a noticeable gap. One that the brand hasn’t quite filled since.

And that’s where Plum’s exit starts to feel like part of a larger pattern.

That said, it’s not all bad news for Under Armour because the company did manage to retain a major name, with Bryce Harper signing a new six-year deal earlier this year.

Still, amid all the questions and chatter, some fans kept it simple by backing the player over all the noise.

“You do you, KP,” the fan wrote, and if we are being honest, that might be the simplest way to look at it.

While the noise around her next move continues to grow, Kelsey Plum herself has remained completely silent on the situation. So, with the new WNBA season right around the corner, fans will have to wait a little longer to see where she ultimately signs.
