With five or fewer games remaining in the 2026 WNBA season, the MVP race has also reached its last stage. While Caitlin Clark is still in the race, A’ja Wilson has taken a significant lead ahead of the Indiana Fever star and Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles. Sydney Colson, the two-time WNBA champion who shared the court with both Clark and Wilson, chose her championship teammate over the Fever star.

“My MVP? Probably A’ja. I think people, a lot of the time, have greatness fatigue, and not in other sports, but for some reason with the WNBA they do, and I just think that’s going to be something that’s not seen for a long time.” she said during her appearance on Yahoo Sports Daily.
A’ja Wilson has dominated both ends of the floor and established a near monopoly on individual accolades since 2022. In the last four seasons, she has won three MVPs, three titles, two Finals MVPs, three Defensive Player of the Year awards, and two scoring titles. She has been the blocks leader for the last four years and made first-team selections on the All-WNBA and All-Defensive teams.
The leading MVP candidate is once again leading the league in points and blocks. She is averaging 26.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game. According to Colson, the Aces star is a rare breed, and perhaps the last breed of point centers in the league, which also includes stars like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier.
However, Wilson’s dominance doesn’t diminish what Caitlin Clark has done individually. She leads the league in assists and has helped Indiana Fever make the playoffs for a third consecutive year.
The Fever guard is also third in scoring behind Wilson and teammate Kelsey Mitchell (24.8). Caitlin Clark has been instrumental in leading the Fever’s offense to the top of the league. The Fever star has shown significant growth this season, and according to her former teammate, she will soon win her MVP award.
“So you may not see it, but you know, fortunately we have a lot of talented guards that are in the running that are going to be in the league for several years, whether it’s Kelsey Mitchell, [Clark], probably Olivia Miles is going to get one soon.”
“Like, there are a lot of other guards who are going to get it for several years as well, but I don’t think that means A’ja should be counted out because she’s still doing it right now.”
However, Sydney Colson isn’t the only one who has someone other than Caitlin Clark to win the MVP race. After all, even Clark’s current teammate Aliyah Boston couldn’t help but choose Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell over the 24-year-old.
“She’s really just the MVP. I think that’s just what she’s been doing. Every single night you see her come out and she drops. I don’t even know how many points at this rate,” Boston said earlier this month.
Following Boston’s comment, even analyst Rachel DeMita said it would be difficult for Caitlin Clark to win the MVP award this year.
“Caitlin Clark had a relatively slow start to the season, and I say that in terms of Caitlin Clark’s standard. She just wasn’t looking like herself at the beginning of the season. In the past 10 to 15 games, I would say this is the best Caitlin Clark that we’ve ever seen.”
Had the Fever been among the top two teams in the league, Clark may have had a better shot at the prize. However, Caitlin Clark and the Fever still have a chance to sweeten their season with a WNBA title.
Although it’s not garunteed but, winning a title will certainly boost Clark’s chances in the playoff race. However, that will be easier said than done, considering they had a tough time against league leaders Minnesota and are 1-2 against No. 2 Golden State Valkyries.
