It has been a lackluster season so far for the Washington Mystics. With a 7-7 record for the season, the Mystics look uninspiring on the court. And Coach Sydney Johnson has called on a key player to step: Georgia Amoore.

Amoore has so far fallen short of the high expectations that coach Johnson and the Mystics’ fanbase have for her. The head coach has also made some comments recently regarding this matter.
“It’s hard to say I didn’t. You know, I want a full season of health from her. Just ask her, like, that’s all I’ve been talking about, you know, definitely want her threes, get those shots up. Please, please, please run the team, put your creativity and your charisma,” Johnson said to the media in a press release.
“But also, I just want health because I trust that if she has health and if she has the minutes… she’s going to grow, you know, and get stuff back from the game. So, as much as anything, I didn’t really put a standard necessarily, but I just want her availability. I think that’s huge for her,” he added.
So while Johnson does leave the door open for Amoore, he clearly wants her to take the mantle. And looking at the numbers, Johnson’s frustration is understandable. Assessing her performance is particularly dicey, given her potential and injury recovery.
Georgia Amoore is right now only averaging 5.4 PTS, 3.5 AST, and 1.1 REB. She’s scoring low numbers and doing so inefficiently. Her FG% is only 29%. Her true shooting percentage ranks in the bottom quartile of the league, at just around 45%. Her team is not relying on her for their output, as she just has a usage rate of around 15 percent, as per the WNBA advanced stats.
She is also performing poorly when shooting from beyond the arc, logging just 28% in the 3P shooting. Her defensive impact is minimal, averaging just 1.1 rebounds per game.
While the numbers do not paint a pretty picture, we cannot be very hard on the number 6 pick. Given that this is still technically her rookie year. She suffered a brutal ACL injury last year, which ruled her out of the season completely.
As minutes increase, her numbers should improve. She already leads the Mystics in assists. While the team is currently just the #8 seed and barely hanging on to the playoffs, her teammates are showing appreciation for the work she is putting in.
“I think Georgia is doing an amazing job. It’s not easy to be a starting point guard coming off an injury,” Kiki Iriafen said about Amoore. “Rookie season, so much is being thrown at her, so much is expected of her. She carries herself with a lot of poise; she’s always trying to find her teammates.”
Sonia Citron Is Leading the Offense for the Mystics
In the absence of other playmaking options, Sonia Citron is leading the Mystics’ offense. She is putting up impressive numbers of her own.
Citron has stepped in, averaging 17.4 PPG on 48.8% from the field – solid efficiency. She currently leads the Mystics in both scoring and steals, at 1.2 per game.
The Mystics have a good team on paper. They snapped the 8-game winning streak of the New York Liberty, winning 86-83 against them. Sonia Citron also feels they can be one of the top teams in the league.
“I think right now we’re just trying to prove that we can be consistent and deliver this kind of game on a consistent basis,” she said to the media after the match. “We’re just trying to take it game-by-game and get better,” she added.
So the potential remains there for Georgia Amoore and Co. to pick up the pieces as the season progresses. They have the team to make a good run.
