Even years after leaving college, the bond between 2025 WNBA Champion Megan Gustafson and her college coach is as strong as ever. As the Portland Fire player tied the knot with David DiLeo, it was her former Iowa coach, Jan Jensen, who expressed her blessings for the couple on X.

“What a special day! Congrats @GustafsonMeg10 & @Daviddileo14,” Jensen wrote via her X handle. “The day was just as spectacular as you two are! It was a joy to see your smiles & feel all the love surrounding you!❤️Love you both… God bless!”

Jensen and Gustafson’s bond traces back to their Iowa Hawkeye days. In her four-year collegiate career, it was Jensen who worked with the 2024 EuroCup champion when she was the program’s associate head coach. Gustafson attended college at the University of Iowa from 2015 to 2019, during the same time that Jensen was serving as the associate head coach at Iowa. She went on to serve in this role till 2024, before being named the head coach on May 15, 2024.

Jensen molded Gustafson into a Naismith College Player of the Year in 2019 and just one of three Hawkeye players to get their jersey retired by the program. It’s no wonder the HC congratulated Gustafson on X owing to their longstanding relationship. During that time, the coach even spoke about Gustafson per The Athletic.

“I could talk about Megan for a week. She was the type of impacting person, not just player. The most impressive thing about her ride was that she never changed. She was as humble and hardworking her last day at Iowa as her first day.”

They have curated a bond that goes beyond basketball. Even after all these years, Gustafson and Jensen have kept in close contact, despite the former graduating back in 2019. For instance, in February, Jensen even attended Gustafson’s wedding shower, where she appeared with the player’s cutout, per her own Instagram post.

“It’s Super Bowl Sunday, but I had a Super Saturday celebrating this bride-to-be. Could not be more proud of ya @GustafsonMeg10..& @Daviddileo14 too.”

The Portland Fire organization joined the celebration, posting a photo of Gustafson with her new surname.

“Just married. Congratulations to Megan & David DiLeo,” the post’s caption read.

Gustafson’s husband, David DiLeo, is also a professional basketball player. Hailing from Iowa City, DiLeo competed at Central Michigan University during his collegiate days. During his professional career, he has spent most of it overseas, competing for teams such as Le Mans and Bahcesehir Koleji.

The couple marks yet another addition to the list of basketball duos in the current generation, and it didn’t take long for Portland players to show their support.

The Portland Fire franchise has been genuinely special for Megan Gustafson. She is having the career-best season in terms of points per game (12.2). She has already started 15 games this season, the most she has ever started in a single season.

But more than her performance, it’s the company she is with that matters. A glimpse of it was evident in a recent Instagram montage video the Portland Fire shared, featuring well-wishes from her teammates and head coach Alex Sarama.

“I’m so happy for you, and I cannot wait to see what the next journey of life is for you. You deserve this, and I love you,” said guard Sarah Ashlee Barker.

“Congrats Megan,” said Emily Engstler. “I’m so happy for you and my boy, David. I hope you guys had the best wedding ever, and I can’t wait to see you back on the court with us.”
