Kayla McBride is having her best scoring season yet statistically as she makes WNBA history during the Minnesota Lynx’s 103-90 win over the Dallas Wings on Sunday. McBride exploded for a career-high 43 points as the Lynx became the first team this season to clinch a playoff spot. Besides leading her team to a playoff berth, McBride also broke the WNBA 3-point record.

McBride hit a record 10 3-pointers on the night, setting the WNBA single-game record for 3-pointers in a game. The previous record of nine 3-pointers in a game was set by Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell, back in 2019, and has been replicated seven times since. Kayla McBride, being her usual humble self after the game, was grateful for the fans and the love she got from the city in her 13th season in the WNBA, after signing back with the Lynx as a free agent this past summer.

“It’s definitely something I’ll reflect on, and just try to be present in it…I’m just very grateful. I’m 34 years old, it’s my 13th year in the league, I’m exactly where I want to be,” McBride said in the post-game press conference.

“Coming back here in the offseason was the best decision I’ve ever made. So grateful to the city of Minneapolis for loving me the way they do…. They’re the first ones chanting my name, even if it is my government (name). And I’m just really where my feet are. That’s the best thing I can give you.”

The Lynx also set a franchise record in this dominating win, dishing out 18 made 3s. It was a night of efficient shooting for Kayla McBride, as she converted 10 of her 14 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Minnesota Lynx have recovered from their surprise loss against the Sparks by winning the next two games on the bounce against two of the top teams in the league, the Aces and the Wings.

McBride got a standing ovation from the fans at the Target Center as she made the record-breaking bucket with around 2:23 left in the fourth quarter. This feat carries even more weight given the fact that the previous mark of nine 3s has been hit by six different players eight times in WNBA history. Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey did it most recently on June 25.

The Lynx are now 27-7 for the season, and this was the third consecutive loss for the Wings, who have now lost six of their last eight games and currently sit in eighth place in the standings with a 19-14 record.

Kayla McBride has shown strong chemistry with rookie Olivia Miles, as the duo combined for 63 points on the night. This rapport was on display as Miles’ presence at the point guard position has certainly helped elevate McBride’s own game. McBride did not hesitate to give the rookie her flowers.

“The last time I played with a true point guard it was Courtney Vandersloot, and it was some of the best, most fun basketball I played. It’s not that I haven’t had amazing moments with Court, but it’s just something about playing with a true PG that’s just, you know, you get that ball with the laces and that velocity, it’s just like, oh, kid in a candy store truly. So I’m very grateful for that,” McBride said, per reporter Andrew Dukowitz.

Coach Cheryl Reeve will certainly hope to keep this good chemistry and momentum going as the Lynx take on Portland Fire next on August 12.
