The Indiana Fever defeated the No. 1 team in the WNBA standings, the Minnesota Lynx, 96-77 on Tuesday. While there were plenty of headlines to come out of the game, one particular incident involving Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever coach Briann January on the sidelines caught the public’s attention.

During the game, cameras caught January animatedly talking to the Fever guard and pointing her finger at the 24-year-old, which was not well received by fans.

“This coach is yelling at Caitlin Clark again,” Hero Of The Day wrote in their X post with a clip of the incident. “There’s no excuse for some nobody to be speaking to the face of the league like this. Caitlin Clark has 10/5/5 (on pace for a trip dub) and is a +11 tonight — What is her problem?”

Throughout the season, there has been a growing narrative that Caitlin Clark and the Fever staff do not always see eye to eye. Head coach Stephanie White and Clark have been involved in heated exchanges several times, leading to reports of a potential rift in the team, which both have categorically denied to the media.

But what makes January’s situation more interesting is that this is the second consecutive game where Clark had an unflattering exchange with a coach. During the Fever’s 93-77 loss to the Washington Mystics on Sunday, Clark couldn’t keep her emotions contained and was seen yelling at White between possessions.

The Fever’s costly defeat had increased their chances of falling all the way to the No. 8 seed with just two regular-season games remaining. The vibes seemed off from the early goings, as Indiana fell into an early double-digit deficit, and its poor defense prompted Clark to share her frustrations with White on the sideline.

But Tuesday’s win has put them fifth in the standings with one game remaining.

There has yet to be a confirmation about what transpired between January and Clark. The duo has previously made headlines after being seen arguing during the Connecticut Sun game in late August, when Clark visibly disagreed with January during a timeout. So for now, that leaves room for fans to take the broader narrative around Caitlin Clark and the coaching staff into consideration, rather than treating the clip as proof of a disagreement.

Clark herself has previously pushed back against narratives surrounding her and the team, emphasizing that what fans see from the outside does not always reflect what is happening internally.

“I think a lot of it is like, it’s not always based in reality,” CLark said in July, per Fox News. “I feel like media and journalism have a responsibility to tell the stories and a lot of times you guys are the ones controlling the narratives about what people read and what people talk about, and a lot of that is sometimes so far out of touch with what is reality.”

While the latest clip may once again fuel the conversation around Caitlin Clark and the Fever coaching staff, the star guard had the perfect response on the court against Minnesota. She finished with 27 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds as Indiana in the blowout 96-77 win.

Kelsey Mitchell also continued her remarkable scoring run, putting up 20 points to extend her WNBA record to 27 consecutive games with at least 20 points. Aliyah Boston added 17 points and seven rebounds.

The Lynx did try to fight back and eventually cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter, but Indiana regained control behind its three stars and pulled away late. The win also kept the Fever’s hopes of earning the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage alive for at least another day.

With just one regular-season game left, the Fever now have an opportunity to carry that momentum into the postseason and settle the final pieces of their playoff picture on the court, provided the player-coach relationship remains positive.
