Stephanie White’s camp has been in disarray, shrouded with rumors and whispers, for the last two weeks with the disappearance of DeWanna Bonner. Brought in for her championship experience and valuable production, the six-foot-four veteran has struggled this season so far. Before her leave of absence, she was averaging about 7 points on less than 40% from the field, a far cry from her All-Star glory days.

Ever since the loss against Atlanta on the 10th, Bonner hasn’t stepped on the hardwood floor because of personal reasons. Although we can’t confirm the rumors as of now, the WNBA community has speculated beyond belief. From medical issues, to retirement, to wanting a trade, there have been too many questions, and not enough answers regarding the Fever vet.

Analyst Rosalina Lee had her piece to say about this on her YouTube channel. “It could be a medical thing. It could be that she’s considering retirement. It could be because she’s seeing that she really can’t keep up with the pacing that the Indiana Fever want to play. She does have kids—there could be a reason that she feels that maybe the pressure of the team is creating issues,” she said, pointing out that it could be literally anything that is keeping Bonner away from the court.

However, there have been rumors of discord between DB and the Indiana Fever. People are pointing at her social media bios, which have no trace of the Fever, and there’s an image being circulated in which her banner has been cut out from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. But according to ES Fact Check, that’s simply not true!

IndyStar reporter Chloe Peterson, a trusted source for the entire WNBA community, pointed out the inaccuracies in the narratives floating around. “It [DB’s banner] was hanging in Gainbridge as of June 17, the last time the Fever had a home game. That photo circulating cut out Bonner’s banner, which was hanging at the end.” She said in a recent tweet.

And to be fair, all the news from the Fever’s end has been quite supportive as well! “She’s doing well,” Head Coach White said about Bonner in the pre-game media availability. “Again, no timeline. I think it’s day-to-day for us. [We] make sure that we’re continuing to be supportive of DB.” But the question remains: what is up with DB? Is she planning on retiring? Let’s delve deeper.

“The ball is gonna stop bouncing one day”: DeWanna Bonner’s old interview spells trouble for Indiana Fever

We all know athletes have a limited shelf life, but it’s completely different in the WNBA. Because not only do the players age, but some of them choose the beautiful path of motherhood in tandem with their careers. DeWanna Bonner walked down this road 8 years ago, and she hasn’t looked back since! However, being a mother and a professional basketball player isn’t a recipe that goes amazingly well together.

The seasons are long and arduous, and you end up missing many important moments in your child’s life. DB is cognizant of this and was quite candid about her future plans in an old interview with Romper. Not to rub salt on the wound, but it’s always hard to accept that sports careers can end, but Bonner had a unique take on the thought of retirement.

Of course, the ball is gonna stop bouncing one day.” She said in the interview with Romper. “You want to make your money when you can, but at the same time I’m looking at them [her twins] and I’m just like, there’s no way that I can go thousands of miles away.” Considering that she’s 37 and her twins are slowly creeping towards double-digits, there’s a definite chance that we might see a chapter being closed soon enough.
