“By the time I got on the plane, I was over it,” that’s what Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White said after her team upset the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner’s Cup. There is no champagne hangover. Just a return to business. It’s not the kind of response you expect from a midseason underdog that shook the league’s best. But that’s the energy surrounding the Indiana Fever right now.
Tonight, they meet the Atlanta Dream at 7:30 PM ET inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, in what’s already their fourth meeting this season. On paper, both teams are tied 8-8, but they’re heading in very different directions. Indiana has been climbing without Caitlin Clark, finding balance and cohesion. Atlanta, on the other hand, has been reeling without Rhyne Howard, struggling to keep rhythm.

Since Caitlin Clark went down with a groin injury, many expected the Fever to stumble. Instead, they’ve climbed to 4th in offensive rating and 3rd in net rating (+10.8) across the league. Natasha Howard has appeared as a two-way anchor, Aliyah Boston continues her low-key dominance in the paint, and Aari McDonald’s burst at the point has helped hold the offense together. In Clark’s absence alongside the continued unavailability of Damiris Dantas, who is on national team duty for Brazil, the Indiana Fever have jumped into the top four in league-wide offensive rating. And tonight, the energy is coming back with Caitlin Clark officially active.
What’s your perspective on:
Can Caitlin Clark's return make Indiana Fever unstoppable, or is their success rooted in team chemistry?

Can Caitlin Clark’s Return Lift the Indiana Fever vs Atlanta Dream Matchup?
Clark’s pull-up range created the space everyone else operated in. But without her, the Fever haven’t panicked. They found new identities. Aliyah Boston has become more vocal on both ends. Kelsey Mitchell (18.9 PPG) has taken more ownership of the offense, cutting decisively and attacking without waiting for a screen. McDonald’s speed in transition adds a new dynamic. It’s functional and it’s winning.

The Indiana Fever went from relying on Clark to proving they could survive even in her absence. Now, with her return, the offense doesn’t reset. It compounds
Meanwhile, the Dream’s supporting cast hasn’t responded with the same cohesion. Tina Charles remains a threat in the post, but without Rhyne Howard’s scoring gravity, defenses have collapsed inward. Haley Jones and Danielle Robinson have yet to provide consistent secondary production, and the bench has struggled to stretch leads or hold them. Their recent 84-76 loss to the Connecticut Sun marked their lowest-scoring game this season.
Tonight, Indiana is expected to roll out a starting five of Aari McDonald, Kelsey Mitchell, Lexie Hull, Natasha Howard, and Aliyah Boston. Atlanta will likely counter with Haley Jones, Allisha Gray, Danielle Robinson, Cheyenne Parker, and Tina Charles. ESPN’s matchup model currently favors the Fever slightly, giving them a 56.2% edge in team cohesion and recent momentum over raw talent.

With Caitlin Clark back, Indiana is no longer just surviving without their star. They’re growing with her return. Built on grit, chemistry, and frontcourt control, the Fever now adds elite playmaking into the equation. Meanwhile, Atlanta’s talent is being tested by inconsistency and depth issues.
Unless Tina Charles and Allisha Gray, Indiana’s momentum, and now their full starting lineup, should carry them through. So, what happens when Indiana Fever doesn’t need Clark to win, but gets her back anyway? What happens when chemistry meets power? That’s the bigger question tonight. Can the Fever write a new chapter one where Caitlin Clark isn’t a crutch, but the closing note to a team that’s already learned how to play the long game?
